77 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
88 AN ACT
99 relating to the appointment of spoken language interpreters for
1010 certain court proceedings.
1111 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1212 SECTION 1. Section 57.002(d), Government Code, is amended
1313 to read as follows:
1414 (d) Subject to Subsection (e), in a county with a population
1515 of 50,000 or more, a court may appoint a spoken language interpreter
1616 who is not a certified or licensed court interpreter:
1717 (1) if:
1818 (A) [(1)] the language necessary in the
1919 proceeding is a language other than Spanish; and
2020 (B) [(2)] the court makes a finding that there is
2121 no licensed court interpreter within 75 miles who can interpret in
2222 the language that is necessary in a proceeding; or
2323 (2) if the court is a justice court, municipal court,
2424 or municipal court of record.
2525 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2025.
