77 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
88 AN ACT
99 relating to training for peace officers on acquired and traumatic
1010 brain injuries and trauma-affected veterans.
1111 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1212 SECTION 1. Section 1701.253, Occupations Code, is amended
1313 by adding Subsection (u) to read as follows:
1414 (u) As part of the minimum curriculum requirements, the
1515 commission shall require an officer to complete the training
1616 programs established under Sections 1701.264 and 1701.265.
1717 SECTION 2. Section 1701.264, Occupations Code, is amended
1818 by adding Subsection (c) to read as follows:
1919 (c) The commission by rule shall require an officer to
2020 complete the training program established under this section unless
2121 the officer has completed the training under Section 1701.253(u) or
2222 other training equivalent to the training program as determined by
2323 the commission.
2424 SECTION 3. Section 1701.265, Occupations Code, is amended
2525 by adding Subsection (c) to read as follows:
2626 (c) The commission by rule shall require an officer to
2727 complete the training program established under this section unless
2828 the officer has completed the training under Section 1701.253(u) or
2929 other training equivalent to the training program as determined by
3030 the commission.
3131 SECTION 4. As soon as practicable after the effective date
3232 of this Act, the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement shall adopt
3333 rules to implement Sections 1701.253(u), 1701.264(c), and
3434 1701.265(c), Occupations Code, as added by this Act.
3535 SECTION 5. The minimum curriculum requirements under
3636 Section 1701.253(u), Occupations Code, as added by this Act, apply
3737 only to an officer who first begins to satisfy those requirements on
3838 or after January 1, 2026.
3939 SECTION 6. This Act takes effect September 1, 2025.
