9 | 9 | | of World War II, and this occasion provides a fitting opportunity to |

10 | 10 | | honor the brave and dedicated members of the U.S. military who |

11 | 11 | | served their country in the conflict; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, On September 2, 1945, the representatives of nine |
---|
13 | 13 | | Allied nations and the surrendering Japanese armed forces signed |
---|
14 | 14 | | the Instrument of Surrender to officially bring World War II to a |
---|
15 | 15 | | close; prepared by the U.S. War Department and approved by |
---|
16 | 16 | | President Harry S. Truman, the document was signed aboard the |
---|
17 | 17 | | battleship USS Missouri, where U.S. Navy Fleet Admiral Chester W. |
---|
18 | 18 | | Nimitz penned his name on behalf of the United States; |
---|
19 | 19 | | Admiral Nimitz, a native of Fredericksburg, commanded more than two |
---|
20 | 20 | | million troops and thousands of ships and planes at the height of |
---|
21 | 21 | | the war in the Pacific Theater and was credited with leading the |
---|
22 | 22 | | navy to victory against the Japanese; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz Memorial Naval |

24 | 24 | | Museum was opened in Fredericksburg in 1967 in honor of |
---|
25 | 25 | | Admiral Nimitz, who had passed away the previous year at the age of |

26 | 26 | | 80; the National Museum of the Pacific War took shape from the |
---|
27 | 27 | | Nimitz Memorial Naval Museum, and at the admiral's earlier request, |
---|
28 | 28 | | it was dedicated to the men and women who served with him in the |
---|
29 | 29 | | Pacific Theater; it is overseen by the Texas Historical Commission, |
---|
30 | 30 | | and in 2006, the U.S. Congress approved the official designation of |
---|
31 | 31 | | the museum, which is the only institution in the continental United |
---|
32 | 32 | | States dedicated exclusively to telling the story of the Pacific |
---|
33 | 33 | | and Asiatic Theaters in World War II; it is also home to the |

34 | 34 | | Admiral Nimitz Gallery, and throughout 2025, the facility will host |

35 | 35 | | a number of public events and programs commemorating the 80th |

37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Demonstrating remarkable valor and heroism, |

38 | 38 | | Admiral Chester Nimitz and his fellow service members upheld the |

39 | 39 | | highest ideals of our nation's armed forces during World War II, and |
---|
40 | 40 | | Americans owe them a debt of gratitude that the passage of time can |
---|
41 | 41 | | never diminish; now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
43 | 43 | | hereby commemorate the 80th anniversary of the conclusion of World |
---|
44 | 44 | | War II and recognize the National Museum of the Pacific War for its |
---|
45 | 45 | | dedication to honoring those who served and supported the war |
---|
46 | 46 | | effort in the Pacific; and, be it further |
---|
47 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
48 | 48 | | prepared for the museum as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
---|
49 | 49 | | House of Representatives and Senate. |
