| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Gifted and talented education supports the academic |

| 9 | 9 | | needs of students with a high potential for achievement, and the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | observance of Gifted and Talented Students Week in April provides |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | an opportunity to celebrate the skills and accomplishments of these |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | students and the dedication of the educators who serve them; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The term "gifted and talented" refers to children |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | and youth who have excelled in intellectual, creative, or artistic |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | endeavors, who possess an unusual capacity for leadership, or who |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | show promise in a specific field of study; due to their unique |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | abilities, these students can benefit from specialized educational |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | services designed to meet their social, emotional, and academic |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | needs; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, There are more than 450,000 identified gifted and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | talented students in Texas; funding is set aside to help provide |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | them with challenging coursework, and teachers of gifted and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | talented classes are required by Texas law to receive additional |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | special training; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, By encouraging exceptional students to develop |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | their individual strengths, we are investing in the leaders, |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | scholars, and innovators of tomorrow, and this vital endeavor is |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | deserving of the wholehearted support and commitment of all Texans; |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | hereby designate the first full week in April as Gifted and Talented |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Students Week; and, be it further |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | 391.004(d), Government Code, this designation remain in effect |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | passed by the legislature. |
