77 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
88 WHEREAS, Gifted and talented education supports the academic
99 needs of students with a high potential for achievement, and the
1010 observance of Gifted and Talented Students Week in April provides
1111 an opportunity to celebrate the skills and accomplishments of these
1212 students and the dedication of the educators who serve them; and
1313 WHEREAS, The term "gifted and talented" refers to children
1414 and youth who have excelled in intellectual, creative, or artistic
1515 endeavors, who possess an unusual capacity for leadership, or who
1616 show promise in a specific field of study; due to their unique
1717 abilities, these students can benefit from specialized educational
1818 services designed to meet their social, emotional, and academic
1919 needs; and
2020 WHEREAS, There are more than 450,000 identified gifted and
2121 talented students in Texas; funding is set aside to help provide
2222 them with challenging coursework, and teachers of gifted and
2323 talented classes are required by Texas law to receive additional
2424 special training; and
2525 WHEREAS, By encouraging exceptional students to develop
2626 their individual strengths, we are investing in the leaders,
2727 scholars, and innovators of tomorrow, and this vital endeavor is
2828 deserving of the wholehearted support and commitment of all Texans;
2929 now, therefore, be it
3030 RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas
3131 hereby designate the first full week in April as Gifted and Talented
3232 Students Week; and, be it further
3333 RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section
3434 391.004(d), Government Code, this designation remain in effect
3535 until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally
3636 passed by the legislature.
