77 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
88 WHEREAS, Cowboys, horses, and ranching are cultural icons
99 that have helped define the identity of the Lone Star State, and
1010 they have played an essential role in the development and
1111 prosperity of Bandera throughout the city's history; and
1212 WHEREAS, Located in the Hill Country northwest of San
1313 Antonio, Bandera was founded in the early 1850s, when the area was
1414 part of the Texas frontier, and in its early years, the town
1515 benefited from the presence of U.S. Cavalry troops stationed nearby
1616 at Camp Verde; when the era of the great cattle drives dawned in the
1717 decades after the Civil War, Bandera became a staging point for
1818 drives up the Western Trail; with plentiful water and grass for the
1919 herds, the town was an ideal departure point for the drives, and
2020 during the 1870s and 1880s, residents witnessed the majestic sight
2121 of cowboys herding several thousand longhorns northward, beginning
2222 a long journey to destinations in Kansas and beyond; and
2323 WHEREAS, The legacy of those epic trail drives has remained a
2424 touchstone for area residents ever since, and today, Bandera's ties
2525 to its Western roots remain strong; the city is a hub for modern-day
2626 ranchers and cowpokes, who not only raise livestock but also
2727 operate guest ranches and horseback riding businesses to serve the
2828 legions of visitors seeking to experience cowboy culture firsthand;
2929 in addition, the city hosts rodeo competitions throughout the year,
3030 and Bandera is renowned for its skilled riders, having produced a
3131 host of state, national, and world champions in the sport; and
3232 WHEREAS, A number of Western-themed annual events take place
3333 in the city, including Cowboy Mardi Gras, the National Day of the
3434 American Cowboy festivities in July, and the Bandera Round-Up
3535 Celebration, a Labor Day weekend festival that includes live music,
3636 gunfighter reenactments, and a longhorn cattle drive and parade;
3737 year-round, visitors can appreciate the town's vintage
3838 architecture, learn more about local history at the Frontier Times
3939 Museum, and go two-stepping at one of the city's honky-tonks; and
4040 WHEREAS, By retaining a vibrant connection with its storied
4141 past, Bandera has long been known as the Cowboy Capital of the
4242 World, and it is indeed fitting that the city be officially accorded
4343 this same title for the State of Texas; now, therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas
4545 hereby designate Bandera as the official Cowboy Capital of Texas;
4646 and, be it further
4747 RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section
4848 391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in effect
4949 until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally
5050 passed by the legislature.
