8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Cowboys, horses, and ranching are cultural icons |

9 | 9 | | that have helped define the identity of the Lone Star State, and |

10 | 10 | | they have played an essential role in the development and |
---|
11 | 11 | | prosperity of Bandera throughout the city's history; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Located in the Hill Country northwest of San |
---|
13 | 13 | | Antonio, Bandera was founded in the early 1850s, when the area was |
---|
14 | 14 | | part of the Texas frontier, and in its early years, the town |
---|
15 | 15 | | benefited from the presence of U.S. Cavalry troops stationed nearby |
---|
16 | 16 | | at Camp Verde; when the era of the great cattle drives dawned in the |
---|
17 | 17 | | decades after the Civil War, Bandera became a staging point for |
---|
18 | 18 | | drives up the Western Trail; with plentiful water and grass for the |
---|
19 | 19 | | herds, the town was an ideal departure point for the drives, and |
---|
20 | 20 | | during the 1870s and 1880s, residents witnessed the majestic sight |
---|
21 | 21 | | of cowboys herding several thousand longhorns northward, beginning |
---|
22 | 22 | | a long journey to destinations in Kansas and beyond; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The legacy of those epic trail drives has remained a |
---|
24 | 24 | | touchstone for area residents ever since, and today, Bandera's ties |
---|
25 | 25 | | to its Western roots remain strong; the city is a hub for modern-day |
---|
26 | 26 | | ranchers and cowpokes, who not only raise livestock but also |
---|
27 | 27 | | operate guest ranches and horseback riding businesses to serve the |
---|
28 | 28 | | legions of visitors seeking to experience cowboy culture firsthand; |
---|
29 | 29 | | in addition, the city hosts rodeo competitions throughout the year, |
---|
30 | 30 | | and Bandera is renowned for its skilled riders, having produced a |
---|
31 | 31 | | host of state, national, and world champions in the sport; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, A number of Western-themed annual events take place |
---|
33 | 33 | | in the city, including Cowboy Mardi Gras, the National Day of the |
---|
34 | 34 | | American Cowboy festivities in July, and the Bandera Round-Up |
---|
35 | 35 | | Celebration, a Labor Day weekend festival that includes live music, |
---|
36 | 36 | | gunfighter reenactments, and a longhorn cattle drive and parade; |
---|
37 | 37 | | year-round, visitors can appreciate the town's vintage |
---|
38 | 38 | | architecture, learn more about local history at the Frontier Times |
---|
39 | 39 | | Museum, and go two-stepping at one of the city's honky-tonks; and |
---|
40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, By retaining a vibrant connection with its storied |
---|
41 | 41 | | past, Bandera has long been known as the Cowboy Capital of the |
---|
42 | 42 | | World, and it is indeed fitting that the city be officially accorded |
---|
43 | 43 | | this same title for the State of Texas; now, therefore, be it |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
45 | 45 | | hereby designate Bandera as the official Cowboy Capital of Texas; |
---|
46 | 46 | | and, be it further |
---|
47 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section |
---|
48 | 48 | | 391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in effect |
---|
49 | 49 | | until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally |
---|
50 | 50 | | passed by the legislature. |
