|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Mineola's downtown has grown into a popular shopping |

| 12 | 12 | | and dining area that epitomizes the town's abundant charm; home to |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | unique stores, famous restaurants, and historic buildings, it is |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | also renowned for the tasty treats made in-house by several local |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | merchants; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The community's world-class sweets shops include |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Grandma Cleda's Gourmet Candy & Gifts, the Mineola Fudge Shop at |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Between Friends, Bryan's Cheesecakes, FarmHouse Fried Pies, and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Bluebonnet Bakery; between them, these establishments offer a range |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | of pies, cakes, cookies, fudge, lemon bars, ice cream, milkshakes, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | malts, and peanut and pecan brittles; in addition to gaining a |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | faithful following in the local area, Mineola's sweets shops have |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | been featured on television, in magazines, and in online media, and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | some of the businesses ship their products nationwide; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Mineola has long been renowned for special |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | celebrations and was designated as the City of Festivals by the 72nd |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Texas Legislature in 1991; while such events as Fiesta de Mayo and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | the Iron Horse Heritage Festival remain beloved annual traditions, |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | the city's stature as an epicenter for sweets stores has become an |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | increasingly prominent draw in recent years; and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, The unique and delectable sweets sold in downtown |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Mineola have made the city a favorite among dessert lovers, and the |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | town's bountiful selection of sugary delights plays an important |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | role in the culture and sense of community shared by its citizens; |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | hereby designate Mineola as the official Sweets Capital of Texas, |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | replacing the city's previous designation as the City of Festivals; |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | and, be it further |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | 391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in effect |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | passed by the legislature. |
