77 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
88 WHEREAS, The one-of-a-kind sweets shops found in downtown
99 Mineola have made the city a popular destination for residents and
1010 visitors alike; and
1111 WHEREAS, Mineola's downtown has grown into a popular shopping
1212 and dining area that epitomizes the town's abundant charm; home to
1313 unique stores, famous restaurants, and historic buildings, it is
1414 also renowned for the tasty treats made in-house by several local
1515 merchants; and
1616 WHEREAS, The community's world-class sweets shops include
1717 Grandma Cleda's Gourmet Candy & Gifts, the Mineola Fudge Shop at
1818 Between Friends, Bryan's Cheesecakes, FarmHouse Fried Pies, and
1919 Bluebonnet Bakery; between them, these establishments offer a range
2020 of pies, cakes, cookies, fudge, lemon bars, ice cream, milkshakes,
2121 malts, and peanut and pecan brittles; in addition to gaining a
2222 faithful following in the local area, Mineola's sweets shops have
2323 been featured on television, in magazines, and in online media, and
2424 some of the businesses ship their products nationwide; and
2525 WHEREAS, Mineola has long been renowned for special
2626 celebrations and was designated as the City of Festivals by the 72nd
2727 Texas Legislature in 1991; while such events as Fiesta de Mayo and
2828 the Iron Horse Heritage Festival remain beloved annual traditions,
2929 the city's stature as an epicenter for sweets stores has become an
3030 increasingly prominent draw in recent years; and
3131 WHEREAS, The unique and delectable sweets sold in downtown
3232 Mineola have made the city a favorite among dessert lovers, and the
3333 town's bountiful selection of sugary delights plays an important
3434 role in the culture and sense of community shared by its citizens;
3535 now, therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas
3737 hereby designate Mineola as the official Sweets Capital of Texas,
3838 replacing the city's previous designation as the City of Festivals;
3939 and, be it further
4040 RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section
4141 391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in effect
4242 until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally
4343 passed by the legislature.
