7+ SENATE RESOLUTION
28 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
39 welcome the citizens of Mission who are gathering in Austin in
410 celebration of Mission Day at the Texas Capitol on February 18,
511 2025; and
612 WHEREAS, Mission has been one of the foremost commercial
713 and agricultural hubs along the Texas border since the city was
814 founded in 1908, the year the Missouri Pacific Railroad
915 established a station in the area; and
1016 WHEREAS, Known as the home of the grapefruit, Mission has a
1117 proud history of citrus-fruit farming since the first citrus
1218 trees in the Rio Grande Valley were planted in the Mission area;
1319 once a year, citizens come together at the Texas Citrus Fiesta to
1420 celebrate their town's contributions to the multimillion-dollar
1521 citrus industry; and
1622 WHEREAS, A center for tourism and exchange between the
1723 United States and Mexico, Mission boasts a flourishing economy
1824 that has attracted agriculture associations, technology firms,
1925 and international manufacturers; the Center for Education and
2026 Economic Development, a business incubator and co-working
2127 facility, has been instrumental in diversifying the local
2228 economy and generating local business growth; and
2329 WHEREAS, In addition to industrial development, Mission
2430 offers a pleasant climate and beautiful natural surroundings to
2531 its 86,000 residents and thousands of seasonal visitors who spend
2632 the winter in Mission's many RV parks; locals and visitors enjoy
2733 such attractions as Mission's National Butterfly Center, the
2834 World Birding Center headquarters, the Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley
2935 State Park, and the Mission hike and bike trails; and
3036 WHEREAS, Mission has been depicted in literature and
3137 popular culture as the iconic setting of Larry McMurtry's classic
3238 Western novel Lonesome Dove and its adapted television
3339 miniseries; Mission is also noted as the home of such prominent
3440 politicians and other well-known figures as United States
3541 Senator Lloyd Bentsen, Congressman Kika de la Garza, and
3642 legendary Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry; and
3743 WHEREAS, The people of Mission are justifiably proud of
3844 their city for its cultural heritage and unique offerings, and
3945 Mission Day at the Capitol is truly a fitting opportunity to
4046 honor the City of Mission and its residents; now, therefore, be
4147 it
4248 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
4349 Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Mission on their
4450 important contributions to the history and prosperity of our
4551 state and extend to them best wishes for a memorable Mission Day
4652 at the Capitol; and, be it further
4753 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
4854 honor of this special occasion.
