2	8		WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	9		welcome the citizens of Mission who are gathering in Austin in
4	10		celebration of Mission Day at the Texas Capitol on February 18,
5	11		2025; and
6	12		WHEREAS, Mission has been one of the foremost commercial
7	13		and agricultural hubs along the Texas border since the city was
8	14		founded in 1908, the year the Missouri Pacific Railroad
9	15		established a station in the area; and
10	16		WHEREAS, Known as the home of the grapefruit, Mission has a
11	17		proud history of citrus-fruit farming since the first citrus
12	18		trees in the Rio Grande Valley were planted in the Mission area;
13	19		once a year, citizens come together at the Texas Citrus Fiesta to
14	20		celebrate their town's contributions to the multimillion-dollar
15	21		citrus industry; and
16	22		WHEREAS, A center for tourism and exchange between the
17	23		United States and Mexico, Mission boasts a flourishing economy
18	24		that has attracted agriculture associations, technology firms,
19	25		and international manufacturers; the Center for Education and
20	26		Economic Development, a business incubator and co-working
21	27		facility, has been instrumental in diversifying the local
22	28		economy and generating local business growth; and
23	29		WHEREAS, In addition to industrial development, Mission
24	30		offers a pleasant climate and beautiful natural surroundings to
25	31		its 86,000 residents and thousands of seasonal visitors who spend
26	32		the winter in Mission's many RV parks; locals and visitors enjoy
27	33		such attractions as Mission's National Butterfly Center, the
28	34		World Birding Center headquarters, the Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley
29	35		State Park, and the Mission hike and bike trails; and
30	36		WHEREAS, Mission has been depicted in literature and
31	37		popular culture as the iconic setting of Larry McMurtry's classic
32	38		Western novel Lonesome Dove and its adapted television
33	39		miniseries; Mission is also noted as the home of such prominent
34	40		politicians and other well-known figures as United States
35	41		Senator Lloyd Bentsen, Congressman Kika de la Garza, and
36	42		legendary Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry; and
37	43		WHEREAS, The people of Mission are justifiably proud of
38	44		their city for its cultural heritage and unique offerings, and
39	45		Mission Day at the Capitol is truly a fitting opportunity to
40	46		honor the City of Mission and its residents; now, therefore, be
41	47		it
42	48		RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
43	49		Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Mission on their
44	50		important contributions to the history and prosperity of our
45	51		state and extend to them best wishes for a memorable Mission Day
46	52		at the Capitol; and, be it further
47	53		RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
48	54		honor of this special occasion.
