2	8		WHEREAS, A distinguished delegation from South Texas is
3	9		visiting Austin on February 19, 2025, to celebrate Rio Grande
4	10		Valley Day at the State Capitol; and
5	11		WHEREAS, Benefiting from a strategic location on the Gulf
6	12		of Mexico and along the Mexican border, the Rio Grande Valley was
7	13		an important ranching region when Texas became the nation's 28th
8	14		state in 1845; over time, the focus shifted from ranching to
9	15		agriculture, and the Rio Grande Valley became the state's center
10	16		of citrus and vegetable production; and
11	17		WHEREAS, Flourishing industry and growing international
12	18		trade in the 1960s led the Rio Grande Valley to become an economic
13	19		powerhouse for the state as it facilitated a tremendous volume of
14	20		goods across the United States-Mexico border; each year, the
15	21		Valley's 13 ports of entry accommodate millions of vehicle and
16	22		pedestrian crossings and facilitate nearly $1 trillion in
17	23		commercial trade; and
18	24		WHEREAS, The Rio Grande Valley is home to a growing
19	25		population of nearly 1.5 million citizens, which has prompted
20	26		local and state leaders to expand access to higher education and
21	27		health care, strengthen the workforce, increase transportation
22	28		and ports of entry infrastructure, and increase funding for
23	29		public education in the region; and
24	30		WHEREAS, A wealth of higher education institutions
25	31		including The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, Texas A&M
26	32		University Higher Education Center, Texas A&M University Health
27	33		Science Center McAllen, South Texas College, Texas Southmost
28	34		College, and Texas State Technical College are located in the
29	35		Valley with new programs being introduced every year; and
30	36		WHEREAS, A vibrant region with a rich heritage, the Rio
31	37		Grande Valley is poised to take advantage of exceptional
32	38		opportunities for economic and community development, and it is
33	39		indeed fitting to honor the Valley's residents on their
34	40		commitment to a bright and prosperous future for the area; now,
35	41		therefore, be it
36	42		RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
37	43		Legislature, hereby recognize February 19, 2025, as Rio Grande
38	44		Valley Day at the Capitol and extend to all in attendance sincere
39	45		best wishes for a productive and enjoyable visit.
