2- WHEREAS, The students, faculty, and staff of Our Lady of
3- the Lake University in San Antonio are celebrating the school's
4- 130th anniversary on February 22, 2025; and
5- WHEREAS, Founded by the Sisters of the Congregation of
6- Divine Providence, OLLU was built on a parcel of land gifted to
7- the order by Mayor Henry Elmendorf; construction on its main
8- building broke ground on August 14, 1895, and it opened a year
9- later as Our Lady of the Lake Academy, an all-girls high

8+ WHEREAS, The students, faculty, and staff of Our Lady of the
9+ Lake University in San Antonio are celebrating the school's 130th
10+ anniversary on February 22, 2025; and
11+ WHEREAS, Founded by the Sisters of the Congregation of Divine
12+ Providence, OLLU was built on a parcel of land gifted to the order
13+ by Mayor Henry Elmendorf; construction on its main building broke
14+ ground on August 14, 1895, and it opened a year later as Our Lady of
15+ the Lake Academy, an all-girls high school; and
1116 WHEREAS, In 1911, the school transitioned into Our Lady of
12- the Lake College, a two-year program for women; it awarded its
13- first bachelor's degree in 1912, and by 1919, it had expanded
14- into a four-year program and earned membership in the Texas
15- Association of Colleges; over the course of the ensuing decade,
16- it became the first San Antonio institution of higher education
17- to receive regional accreditation and the third Texas school to
18- be approved by the American Association of Universities; and

2731 WHEREAS, In the 2000s, OLLU saw the establishment of its
2832 first athletic programs, as well as renovations to its main
2933 building and the adjacent Lake Elmendorf Park; the school was
3034 designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber
3135 Defense Education in 2017; and
3236 WHEREAS, Today, Our Lady of the Lake serves nearly 2,000
33- students and offers more than 70 undergraduate, 15 graduate, and
34- 4 doctoral programs across its three campuses; it benefits from
35- the leadership of President Abel A. Chávez, and since his
36- appointment in 2022, the school has raised more than $31 million,
37- launched new programs, and created additional scholarships; and

43- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
44- Legislature, hereby commemorate the 130th anniversary of Our
45- Lady of the Lake University and extend to all those associated
46- with the institution sincere best wishes for the future; and, be
47- it further
44+ enriched them both academically and personally, and in so doing, it
45+ has made important contributions to Texas and the world beyond;
46+ now, therefore, be it
47+ RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 89th Texas Legislature
48+ hereby commemorate the 130th anniversary of Our Lady of the Lake
49+ University and extend to all those associated with the institution
50+ sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
4851 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
49- prepared for OLLU as an expression of high regard from the
50- Texas Senate.
