2	8		WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	9		recognize the Most Reverend Bishop Joe Steve Vásquez, who was
4	10		recently appointed to serve as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of
5	11		Galveston-Houston by Pope Francis; and
6		-	WHEREAS, A native of Stamford, Texas, Archbishop-Designate
7		-	Vásquez has served the Catholic Diocese of Austin since 2010; he
8		-	earned a bachelor's degree in theology from the University of
9		-	Saint Thomas in Houston and a licentiate in sacred theology from
10		-	the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome; and
	12	+	WHEREAS, A native of Stamford, Texas,
	13	+	Archbishop-Designate Vásquez has served the Catholic Diocese of
	14	+	Austin since 2010; he earned a bachelor's degree in theology from
	15	+	the University of Saint Thomas in Houston and a licentiate in
	16	+	sacred theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in
	17	+	Rome; and
11	18		WHEREAS, After his ordination into the priesthood in 1984,
12	19		he devoted himself as a pastor and parochial vicar at churches in
13	20		Odessa, Fort Stockton, and San Angelo; in 2002, he received
14	21		episcopal ordination and was named auxiliary bishop of the
15	22		Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, where he gained significant
16	23		experience as a vicar, chancellor, moderator, and secretariat
17	24		director; and
18	25		WHEREAS, Bishop Vásquez was installed as the fifth bishop
19	26		of the Diocese of Austin in 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI, and over
20	27		the last 15 years, he has faithfully served more than 700,000
21	28		Catholics and religious leaders in 25 Central Texas counties; and
22	29		WHEREAS, This esteemed bishop is returning to the
23	30		Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston on March 25, 2025, to lead a
24	31		diverse and growing ministry of 1.8 million members and to
25	32		fulfill his mission to care for families, minister to young
26	33		adults, and promote the priesthood for future Catholic leaders;
27	34		he is a highly esteemed and beloved clergyman, and he is truly
28	35		deserving of special recognition for his life of ministerial
29	36		service; now, therefore, be it
30	37		RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
31	38		Legislature, hereby commend Archbishop-Designate Joe Steve
32	39		Vásquez on his decades of exemplary spiritual leadership and his
33	40		devoted service to the Diocese of Austin and extend to him best
34	41		wishes for success in his new role as Archbishop of
35	42		Galveston-Houston; and, be it further
36	43		RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
37	44		him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
