9 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Edward Greer was born in Gary, West Virginia, on |

10 | 12 | | March 8, 1924, to Walter Greer and Vesta Long; he graduated from |

11 | 13 | | West Virginia State College, and he later earned a master's |
---|
12 | 14 | | degree in international affairs from The George Washington |
---|
13 | 15 | | University; and |
---|
14 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Answering his nation's call to duty, Mr. Greer |
---|
15 | 17 | | enlisted in the U.S. Army as a teenager during World War II, and |
---|
16 | 18 | | he was a member of the 777th Field Artillery Battalion, an |
---|
17 | 19 | | all-Black unit, and was elevated to master sergeant; |
---|
18 | 20 | | commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1948, he also served in |
---|
19 | 21 | | the Korean War and the Vietnam War, when he was deputy commander |
---|
20 | 22 | | of the XXIV Corps Artillery and commander of the 108th Artillery |
---|

22 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Breaking racial barriers, Mr. Greer become one of |
---|
23 | 25 | | the first African American officers to be promoted to brigadier |

24 | 26 | | general in the U.S. Army in 1972; his ascension to the rank of |

25 | 27 | | major general came later that year; he rose to the positions of |
---|
26 | 28 | | deputy commanding general at Fort Leonard Wood and second in |
---|
27 | 29 | | command for the U.S. Army Military Personnel Center; |
---|
28 | 30 | | demonstrating exceptional leadership and valor in uniform, he |
---|
29 | 31 | | received multiple awards, including the Distinguished Service |
---|
30 | 32 | | Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, and |
---|
32 | 34 | | Commendation Medal, and Army Commendation Medal; he retired in |
---|
33 | 35 | | 1976, and he went on to enjoy a rewarding 30-year career in real |

34 | 36 | | estate in El Paso, where he was actively engaged in the veterans |

36 | 38 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Greer enjoyed the love |

37 | 39 | | and support of his wife of 73 years, the late Jewell Means Greer; |

38 | 40 | | they raised three children, Gail, Kenneth, and Michael, and he |

39 | 41 | | later took great pride in his four grandchildren and seven |

41 | 43 | | WHEREAS, Edward Greer inspired generations of African |

42 | 44 | | American military service members, and he leaves behind a legacy |
