6+ SENATE RESOLUTION
57 WHEREAS, The life of a trailblazing officer in the United
68 States Army drew to a close with the passing of Major General
79 (Ret.) Edward Greer of El Paso on January 29, 2025, at the age of
810 100; and
911 WHEREAS, Edward Greer was born in Gary, West Virginia, on
1012 March 8, 1924, to Walter Greer and Vesta Long; he graduated from
1113 West Virginia State College, and he later earned a master's
1214 degree in international affairs from The George Washington
1315 University; and
1416 WHEREAS, Answering his nation's call to duty, Mr. Greer
1517 enlisted in the U.S. Army as a teenager during World War II, and
1618 he was a member of the 777th Field Artillery Battalion, an
1719 all-Black unit, and was elevated to master sergeant;
1820 commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1948, he also served in
1921 the Korean War and the Vietnam War, when he was deputy commander
2022 of the XXIV Corps Artillery and commander of the 108th Artillery
2123 Group; and
2224 WHEREAS, Breaking racial barriers, Mr. Greer become one of
2325 the first African American officers to be promoted to brigadier
2426 general in the U.S. Army in 1972; his ascension to the rank of
2527 major general came later that year; he rose to the positions of
2628 deputy commanding general at Fort Leonard Wood and second in
2729 command for the U.S. Army Military Personnel Center;
2830 demonstrating exceptional leadership and valor in uniform, he
2931 received multiple awards, including the Distinguished Service
3032 Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, and
31- Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Medal, Joint Service
33+ Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Medal Joint Service
3234 Commendation Medal, and Army Commendation Medal; he retired in
3335 1976, and he went on to enjoy a rewarding 30-year career in real
3436 estate in El Paso, where he was actively engaged in the veterans
3537 community; and
3638 WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Greer enjoyed the love
3739 and support of his wife of 73 years, the late Jewell Means Greer;
3840 they raised three children, Gail, Kenneth, and Michael, and he
3941 later took great pride in his four grandchildren and seven
4042 great-grandchildren; and
4143 WHEREAS, Edward Greer inspired generations of African
4244 American military service members, and he leaves behind a legacy
4345 that will resonate for many years to come; now, therefore, be it
44- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
45- Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of U.S. Army Major
46- General (Ret.) Edward Greer and extend heartfelt sympathy to the
47- members of his family: to his son, Dr. Michael Edward Greer, and
48- his husband, Steve Bryant; to his grandchildren, Lisa Cobb,
49- Alissa Maru and her husband, Anteneh, Vaun Greer and his wife,
50- Cynthia, and Tia Greer; to his great-grandchildren, Melia,
51- Morgan, Maya, Zinzi, Clarke, Jude, and AK; and to all who mourn
52- his passing; and, be it further
46+ RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 89th Texas Legislature
47+ hereby pay tribute to the memory of U.S. Army Major General
48+ (Ret.) Edward Greer and extend heartfelt sympathy to the members
49+ of his family: to his son, Dr. Michael Edward Greer, and his
50+ husband, Steve Bryant; to his grandchildren, Lisa Cobb, Alissa
51+ Maru and her husband, Anteneh, Vaun Greer and his wife, Cynthia,
