28 WHEREAS, Proud citizens and community leaders from Grand
3- Prairie are visiting the State Capitol on February 26 and 27,
4- 2025, and this occasion offers a welcome opportunity to honor
5- this vibrant North Texas city; and
6- WHEREAS, Located west of downtown Dallas in Dallas,
7- Tarrant, and Ellis Counties, Grand Prairie traces its roots back
8- to 1863, when A. M. Dechman's wagon broke down on his trip from
9- Jacksonville, Texas, to Fort Belknap with supplies for the army
10- commissary; he traded his broken wagon, ox team, and $200 for a
11- 239-acre tract of land; and
12- WHEREAS, The community became known as Deckman, or
13- Dechman, when a post office was constructed in 1874, and the
14- arrival of the Texas and Pacific Railway brought additional
15- growth; the railroad company had already started referring to the
16- town as "Grand Prairie," which officially became the city's name
17- in 1877; Grand Prairie was incorporated in 1902, and the area
18- experienced a significant boom during the Second World War, when
19- a military flight training center and an aircraft production
20- factory were established nearby, bringing the city's population
21- from 1,595 to approximately 18,000; and

29+ residents, and as part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, it is in
30+ one of the fastest-growing regions in the nation; the Grand Prairie
31+ Chamber of Commerce has played an important role in enhancing the
32+ city's economic vitality and quality of life and in promoting,
33+ strengthening, and expanding its business community; and
2934 WHEREAS, Residents and visitors alike benefit from the
30- community's many popular attractions, including the Lynn Creek
31- Park and Marina, the Grand Prairie Historical Museum, Asia Times
32- Square, and the Hong Kong Market; the city also hosts a number of
33- annual events, such as the Dragon Boat Festival, the Prairie
34- Lights Christmas display, and the Gathering at the Village; with
35- 52 parks and 6 lake areas, outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the
36- city for such activities as hiking, water sports, and camping;
37- and
35+ community's many popular attractions, including the Lynn Creek Park
36+ and Marina, the Grand Prairie Historical Museum, Asia Times Square,
37+ and the Hong Kong Market; the city also hosts a number of annual
38+ events, such as the Dragon Boat Festival, the Prairie Lights

3842 WHEREAS, Acknowledging their rich history as they work to
3943 build an even brighter future, the citizens of Grand Prairie are
4044 justifiably proud of their community, and it is indeed fitting to
41- honor their contributions to the story of the Lone Star State;
42- now, therefore, be it
43- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State Texas, 89th
44- Legislature, hereby recognize February 26 and 27, 2025, as Grand
45- Prairie Days at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the
46- visiting delegation.
