| 5 | 11 | | Washington County Day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 6 | 12 | | WHEREAS, In the early 1820s, members of Stephen F. Austin's |
|---|
| 7 | 13 | | Old Three Hundred began settling in the area and formed a |
|---|
| 8 | 14 | | community known as Washington-on-the-Brazos; the town became a |
|---|
| 9 | 15 | | major center of activity during the Texas Revolution and hosted |
|---|
| 10 | 16 | | the Convention of 1836, where delegates signed the Texas |
|---|
| 11 | 17 | | Declaration of Independence and drafted a constitution for the |
|---|
| 12 | 18 | | new republic; and |
|---|
| 13 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Washington County was formally established in |
|---|
| 14 | 20 | | 1836, and from 1842 through 1845, Washington-on-the-Brazos |
|---|
| 15 | 21 | | served as the capital of the republic; the region attracted |
|---|
| 16 | 22 | | substantial immigration and developed quickly, and among the |
|---|
| 17 | 23 | | flow of newcomers were Germans, Czechs, and Poles, who began |
|---|
| 18 | 24 | | arriving in the mid-19th century; and |
|---|
| 19 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Young Texans had several colleges to choose from |
|---|
| 20 | 26 | | in the county, including Baylor University, which was |
|---|
| 21 | 27 | | established in Independence in 1846, and Soule University, which |
|---|
| 22 | 28 | | eventually merged with other schools to become Southwestern |
|---|
| 23 | 29 | | University; the commitment to higher education continues to be |
|---|
| 24 | 30 | | carried on at Blinn College, which was founded in 1883 and is |
|---|
| 25 | 31 | | located in Brenham, the county seat; and |
|---|
| 26 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Washington County is a popular destination for |
|---|
| 27 | 33 | | tourists due to its natural beauty and its significant role in |
|---|
| 28 | 34 | | early Texas history; visitors can drive along scenic country |
|---|
| 29 | 35 | | roads, enjoy recreational activities at Somerville Lake, and |
|---|
| 30 | 36 | | explore the past at the Star of the Republic Museum in |
|---|
| 31 | 37 | | Washington-on-the-Brazos and at additional museums in Brenham, |
|---|
| 32 | 38 | | Burton, Chappell Hill, and Independence; and |
|---|
| 33 | 39 | | WHEREAS, A vibrant gem of the Lone Star State, Washington |
|---|
| 34 | 40 | | County stands out for its rich history and lively community |
|---|
| 35 | 41 | | spirit, and it is indeed a pleasure to commend the leaders and |
|---|
| 36 | 42 | | residents of Washington County as they embrace a bright and |
|---|
| 37 | 43 | | promising future filled with opportunity; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 38 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th |
|---|
| 39 | 45 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 26, 2025, as Washington |
|---|
| 40 | 46 | | County Day at the Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation |

| 41 | 47 | | heartfelt greetings and best wishes for a memorable and enjoyable |

| 42 | 48 | | visit; and, be it further |
