2	8		WHEREAS, The celebration of University of Houston-Downtown
3	9		Day at the State Capitol on February 26, 2025, provides a fitting
4	10		opportunity to recognize this notable institution; and
5	11		WHEREAS, Established in 1974, the University of
6		-	Houston-Downtown has built a reputation as a welcoming campus
7		-	~~with~~ an accessible location in the heart of Houston; the
8		-	~~university~~ serves more than 14,000 students annually and boasts
9		-	~~over 71,000~~ alumni, and it benefits from the able leadership of
10		-	~~its seventh~~ president, Dr. Loren J. Blanchard; and
11		-	WHEREAS, The student body at UHD is highly representative
12		-	of the vibrant Houston community; approximately 70 percent of the
	12	+	Houston-Downtown has built a reputation as a welcoming campus with
	13	+	an accessible location in the heart of Houston; the university
	14	+	serves more than 14,000 students annually and boasts over 71,000
	15	+	alumni, and it benefits from the able leadership of its seventh
	16	+	president, Dr. Loren J. Blanchard; and
	17	+	WHEREAS, The student body at UHD is highly representative of
	18	+	the vibrant Houston community; approximately 70 percent of the
13	19		university's freshmen are first-generation college students, 58
14	20		percent receive Pell Grants, and 65 percent transfer from
15	21		partnering community colleges; and
16		-	WHEREAS, Today, UHD offers 45 bachelor's degrees, 12
17		-	master's degrees, and 24 opportunities for online degree
18		-	completion, including five graduate programs; moreover, the
19		-	institution has been designated a comprehensive regional
20		-	university by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of
21		-	Higher Education; and
22		-	WHEREAS, The university has four distinct academic
23		-	colleges, including the College of Humanities and Social
24		-	Sciences, the College of Public Service, the College of
25		-	Sciences and Technology, and the Marilyn Davies College of
26		-	Business; currently, UHD is working to develop the Center for
27		-	Crime, Urban Research, and Education to help shape the future
28		-	of public safety in Southeast Texas; and
29		-	WHEREAS, UHD ranks as one of the most affordable
30		-	institutions of higher learning in the state; moreover, it
31		-	maintains a commitment to civic engagement, social mobility, and
32		-	economic impact in the city of Houston; and

38		-	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
39		-	Legislature, hereby recognize February 26, 2025, as University
40		-	of Houston-Downtown Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm
41		-	welcome to the visiting delegation.
