2	8		WHEREAS, Longhorns and Aggies are uniting at the State
3	9		Capitol on February 26, 2025, to celebrate The University of
4	10		Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University with Orange and Maroon
5		-	Legislative Day, a day when the state's two largest
6		-	~~universities~~ work together to promote higher education in the
7		-	~~State of Texas;~~ and

8	14		WHEREAS, Alumni from the two institutions total more than
9	15		1.17 million, and The University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M
10	16		University had a combined enrollment of nearly 133,000 students
11	17		in the fall of 2024, with nearly 35,000 students receiving
12	18		degrees that year; the schools boast superb museums and
13	19		libraries, including the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library
14	20		and Museum and the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library and
15	21		Museum, and both universities are renowned for their exceptional
16	22		research, with combined annual research expenditures of more
17	23		than $2.3 billion; and
18	24		WHEREAS, The teaching and research missions of The
19	25		University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University benefit
20	26		the State of Texas through the cultivation of informed and
21	27		engaged citizens, and they drive economic prosperity through
22	28		technological innovation, entrepreneurial spirit, improved
23	29		health care, and scientific breakthroughs; and
24	30		WHEREAS, Researchers from The University of Texas at
25	31		Austin and Texas A&M University explore, discover, and innovate
26	32		in the sciences, arts, and humanities and have been granted
27	33		numerous patents; as Tier One research institutions, both
28	34		universities provide students valuable opportunities for applied
29	35		learning with guidance from outstanding faculty across the
30	36		disciplines, and both universities broaden access to higher
31	37		education for underserved populations; and
32	38		WHEREAS, Both universities serve as important cultural
33	39		centers that engage Texans in the visual and performing arts and
34	40		other creative endeavors; the schools promote athletics and
35	41		physical education and inspire Texans to stay active and join
36	42		together in support of student athletes; and
37	43		WHEREAS, The combined faculties feature Nobel laureates
38	44		and more than 100 National Academy members, and those attending
39	45		the schools include National Merit scholars, Rhodes scholars,
40	46		Olympic gold medalists, and many of the Lone Star State's most
41	47		outstanding students; in addition, the two universities offer an
42	48		amazing range of postgraduate opportunities with more than 350
43	49		graduate degree programs; and
44	50		WHEREAS, The two universities have proven records of
45		-	support for our nation's military; the schools have
46		-	~~commissioned~~ tens of thousands of uniformed officers
47		-	~~throughout their storied~~ histories and enroll hundreds of
48		-	~~veterans each semester,~~ establishing their commitment to
49		-	~~providing new opportunities to~~ our nation's bravest in
50		-	~~supportive, military-friendly~~ environments; and
	51	+	support for our nation's military; the schools have commissioned
	52	+	tens of thousands of uniformed officers throughout their storied

52	58		University have positioned themselves as preeminent institutions
53	59		of higher education on the state, national, and international
54	60		levels, and Texans are fortunate to have access to these two
55	61		exceptional state university systems; now, therefore, be it
56	62		RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
57	63		Legislature, hereby recognize February 26, 2025, as Orange and
58	64		Maroon Legislative Day and commend students and alumni from The
59	65		University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University for their
60	66		commitment to supporting higher education in the Lone Star State.
