7+ R E S O L U T I O N
28 WHEREAS, For seven decades, the Women's Symphony League of
39 Tyler has contributed immeasurably to the arts community in East
410 Texas; and
5- WHEREAS, The Women's Symphony League of Tyler was founded
6- in 1955 by Lillie Belle Etter, Imogene Fair, Cris Selman, Zoe
7- Talbert, and Gertrude Windsor to promote the growth and
8- development of the East Texas Symphony Orchestra; the five women
9- organized the charter membership of the league, which since its
10- inception has raised millions of dollars to support ETSO and
11- music education in the region; symphony league volunteers offer
12- assistance at each orchestra performance, and volunteers also
13- help provide meals and housing for musicians visiting Tyler; and
14- WHEREAS, Benefiting from the current leadership of
15- president Holly Long Burke, the Women's Symphony League today
16- counts more than 500 active members; among its initiatives, the
17- group oversees the Junior Symphony League and awards
18- scholarships to high school and middle school students
19- participating in music programs and to individuals who are
20- majoring in music at a college or university; and
21- WHEREAS, Over the past 70 years, the Women's Symphony
22- League of Tyler has played an important role in educating and
23- uniting people through the power of music, and its members, both
24- past and present, may indeed take great pride in the cultural
25- impact they have made across the East Texas region; now,
26- therefore, be it
27- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
28- Legislature, hereby commend the Women's Symphony League of Tyler
29- for its longtime contributions to music education and the East
30- Texas Symphony Orchestra and extend to all those associated with
31- the organization sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it
32- further
