28 WHEREAS, Proud members of the South Central Region of Alpha
3- Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., are gathering in Austin on
4- January 29, 2025, to celebrate Alpha Kappa Alpha Day at the State
5- Capitol; and
9+ Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., are gathering in Austin on January 29,
10+ 2025, to celebrate Alpha Kappa Alpha Day at the State Capitol; and
611 WHEREAS, The nation's first Greek sorority for African
712 American women, Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded as a social and
813 service organization on January 15, 1908, by Howard University
914 undergraduate Ethel Hedgeman Lyle and 19 other students; these
1015 inspiring women are today known as "the Twenty Pearls"; and
11- WHEREAS, The sorority seeks to cultivate and encourage
12- high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and
13- friendship among college women, to improve the social stature of
14- women of all ages, and to be of service to all mankind; a member
15- of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Alpha Kappa Alpha serves
16- people around the world through the efforts of more than 360,000
17- members in over 1,000 chapters located in the United States, the
18- U.S. Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, Germany,
19- South Korea, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Liberia, Nigeria,
20- and South Africa; and
16+ WHEREAS, The sorority seeks to cultivate and encourage high
17+ scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship
18+ among college women, to improve the social stature of women of all
19+ ages, and to be of service to all mankind; a member of the National
20+ Pan-Hellenic Council, Alpha Kappa Alpha serves people around the
21+ world through the efforts of more than 360,000 members in over 1,000
22+ chapters located in the United States, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the
23+ Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, Germany, South Korea, Japan, the United
24+ Arab Emirates, Liberia, Nigeria, and South Africa; and
2125 WHEREAS, For more than a century, the group has made a
22- positive difference with its important work in the areas of
23- civil rights, education, economic empowerment, and health
24- care; under the leadership of the sorority's 31st
25- international president, Danette Anthony Reed, Alpha Kappa
26- Alpha continues to focus on the personal and professional
27- development of its members, on the bonds of sisterhood, and on
28- its domestic and international servant leadership; and
29- WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., has long
30- remained at the forefront of effective advocacy and social
31- change, and its members' efforts have made an important
32- contribution to the goals of equality and equity for all citizens
33- of the world; now, therefore, be it
34- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
35- Legislature, hereby recognize January 29, 2025, as Alpha Kappa
36- Alpha Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the
37- sorority's visiting delegation.
