2- WHEREAS, Residents of Port Aransas are gathering in Austin
3- on March 5, 2025, to celebrate Port Aransas Day at the State
4- Capitol; and
5- WHEREAS, In the early 1800s, Mustang Island was frequented
6- by the famed buccaneer Jean Lafitte, and in 1855, an English
7- sheep and cattle rancher named Robert A. Mercer built a cabin on
8- the island; a community developed around the site, and the first
9- post office was established in 1888; initially called
10- Ropesville, the town was renamed Tarpon eight years later to
11- highlight the island's fine fishing, and in 1911, it was
12- officially designated as Port Aransas; and

2934 nearly $19 million in city and state hotel taxes and more than $15

3136 WHEREAS, The community is served by the Port Aransas
3237 Independent School District, and over the course of its 112-year
3338 history, it has demonstrated a long-standing tradition of
34- excellence and a commitment to helping students become
35- responsible citizens and reach their full potential; the area
36- further benefits from the educational opportunities provided by
37- The University of Texas Marine Science Institute, which supports
38- sustainability and research in fields vital to the future of the
39- Texas coast; and
40- WHEREAS, Blessed with natural beauty and a colorful
41- history, Port Aransas is one of the Lone Star State's great
42- treasures, and its citizens may indeed take pride in their rich
43- heritage; now, therefore, be it
44- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
45- Legislature, hereby recognize March 5, 2025, as Port Aransas Day
46- at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting
47- delegation.
