8+ WHEREAS, Members of the Houston East End Chamber of Commerce
9+ are gathering in Austin on February 4, 2025, to celebrate East End
10+ Day at the State Capitol; and
511 WHEREAS, Predating the founding of the City of Houston, the
612 East End can trace its origins to the 1820s, when New York
7- entrepreneur John Richardson Harris established Harrisburg at
8- the intersection of Brays and Buffalo Bayous; after briefly
9- serving as the capital of the Republic of Texas, the town was
10- annexed by Houston in 1926; today, the East End encompasses more
11- than 234,000 people and 7,700 businesses, and it remains a
12- location of great importance as the proud home of the Port of
13- Houston, one of the nation's foremost ports for international
14- trade and one of the largest port facilities in the world; and
15- WHEREAS, The Houston East End Chamber of Commerce was
16- founded in 1991 to promote economic expansion and investment in
17- the area; guided by this central goal, the chamber hosts a wide
18- range of programs, such as business luncheons,
19- business-to-business seminars, and other events that encourage
20- new commercial ventures, foster good will, and support existing
21- businesses; moreover, the group created the L.E.A.D. East End
22- program to mentor leaders through an educational series that
23- emphasizes the value of professional development and community
24- involvement; and
25- WHEREAS, Dedicated to equipping the next generation with
26- the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed, the chamber
27- foundation has awarded more than $600,000 in scholarships over
28- the past 19 years; in addition, the chamber hosts an annual
29- Education Symposium to create a bridge between local schools and
30- industries with the goal of developing a workforce that meets the
31- needs of businesses; and
