2- WHEREAS, Proud members of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity
3- are gathering at the State Capitol on March 4, 2025, providing a
4- fitting opportunity to celebrate the fraternity's exceptional
5- legacy of civic engagement; and
6- WHEREAS, Launched at Cornell University on December 4,
7- 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha was the first intercollegiate Greek-letter
8- fraternity established by African Americans; founded by seven
9- men who came to be known as the "Jewels" of the organization,
10- Alpha Phi Alpha initially served as a study and support group for
11- minority students who were struggling against racial prejudice;
12- these early leaders laid the foundation for the fraternity's
13- principles of scholarship, fellowship, character, and the
14- uplifting of humanity; and
15- WHEREAS, In the years that followed, Alpha Phi Alpha
16- chapters were formed at other colleges across the nation; while
17- the fraternity placed a strong emphasis on the academic
18- excellence of its members, it also expanded its focus to address
19- the educational, economic, political, and social injustices
20- faced by African Americans and people of color around the world;
21- over the decades, many former Alpha Phi Alpha members have stood
22- at the forefront of the fight for civil rights, including W. E. B.
23- Du Bois, Paul Robeson, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood
24- Marshall, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Edward Brooke, Andrew Young,
25- and William Gray; and
26- WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha has been an interracial group
27- since 1945 and now encompasses chapters across the United States;
28- the fraternity has an especially rich history in the Lone Star
29- State, which has been home to three of the organization's general

3036 presidents, and a number of prominent Texas leaders are Alpha Phi
3137 Alpha alumni; and
32- WHEREAS, For more than a century, Alpha Phi Alpha has
33- worked to foster a brotherhood of concerned citizens who devote
34- themselves to the greater good, and its members may indeed
35- reflect with pride on their organization's noteworthy tradition
36- of activism and achievement; now, therefore, be it
37- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
38- Legislature, hereby recognize March 4, 2025, as Alpha Phi Alpha
39- Fraternity Day at the State Capitol and extend to all those
40- associated with the organization sincere best wishes for the
41- future; and, be it further
38+ WHEREAS, For more than a century, Alpha Phi Alpha has worked
39+ to foster a brotherhood of concerned citizens who devote themselves
40+ to the greater good, and its members may indeed reflect with pride
41+ on their organization's noteworthy tradition of activism and
42+ achievement; now, therefore, be it
43+ RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 89th Texas Legislature
44+ hereby recognize March 4, 2025, as Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Day at
45+ the State Capitol and extend to all those associated with the
46+ organization sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
4247 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
43- prepared for the fraternity as an expression of high regard from
44- the Texas Senate.
