2- WHEREAS, Many proud Texans are visiting Austin on
3- March 4, 2025, to celebrate Texas Southern University Day at the
4- State Capitol; and
5- WHEREAS, One of the nation's preeminent historically
6- Black colleges and universities, TSU was founded in 1927; it
7- was designated as a special-purpose institution of higher
8- education for urban programming by the Texas Legislature in
9- 1973 and retains a steadfast commitment to innovative
10- approaches that respond to the metropolitan environment and
11- beyond; and

8+ WHEREAS, Many proud Texans are visiting Austin on March 4,
9+ 2025, to celebrate Texas Southern University Day at the State
10+ Capitol; and
11+ WHEREAS, One of the nation's preeminent historically Black
12+ colleges and universities, TSU was founded in 1927; it was
13+ designated as a special-purpose institution of higher education for
14+ urban programming by the Texas Legislature in 1973 and retains a
15+ steadfast commitment to innovative approaches that respond to the
16+ metropolitan environment and beyond; and
1217 WHEREAS, The university now serves approximately 8,700
1318 undergraduate and graduate students from around the world; it
14- offers well over 100 baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral
15- degree programs in numerous schools, including the Barbara
16- Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs, named after
17- two alumni who served with distinction in the United States
18- Congress; and
19- WHEREAS, TSU is noted for its Thurgood Marshall School of
20- Law and its College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences; the
21- university is also active in the Texas Legislative Internship
22- Program, which grants students the opportunity to gain
23- valuable experience in state government, alongside many
24- legislators who share personal ties to their alma mater; and
25- WHEREAS, Under the leadership of its 14th president,
26- James W. Crawford III, retired vice admiral and judge
27- advocate general of the U.S. Navy, TSU has redoubled its
28- efforts to increase student achievement rates and academic
29- rigor, as demonstrated by the most recent four-year
30- graduation rate that is the highest on record, while expanding
31- its research programs, enhancing its culture, and developing
32- stronger relationships with Houston-area public schools,
33- local community colleges, alumni, corporate and private

40- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
41- Legislature, hereby recognize March 4, 2025, as Texas
42- Southern University Day at the State Capitol and extend to all
43- those associated with the institution sincere best wishes for
44- the future; and, be it further
38+ WHEREAS, For nearly a century, Texas Southern University has
39+ played an important role in higher education in the Lone Star State,
40+ and its graduates continue to achieve success and make significant
41+ contributions in numerous fields of endeavor; now, therefore, be it
42+ RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 89th Texas Legislature
43+ hereby recognize March 4, 2025, as Texas Southern University Day at
44+ the State Capitol and extend to all those associated with the
45+ institution sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
4546 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4647 prepared for Texas Southern University as an expression of high
47- regard from the Texas Senate.
