11 | 17 | | rancher Richard King, and it eventually became the county seat |

12 | 18 | | and the largest cattle-shipping point in the world; and |

13 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Jim Wells County was established by the Texas |
---|
14 | 20 | | Legislature on March 11, 1911, and was named for politician and |
---|
15 | 21 | | land developer James B. Wells Jr.; the county contributed |
---|
16 | 22 | | significantly to the development of southwestern Texas, and |
---|
17 | 23 | | since the mid-1800s, its cattle industry has played a key role in |
---|
18 | 24 | | the area's economy; and |
---|
19 | 25 | | WHEREAS, The first significant oil activity in Jim Wells |
---|
20 | 26 | | County began in 1936, and the first regional major oil producer |
---|
21 | 27 | | was established northeast of Alice; the county's economy has |
---|
22 | 28 | | benefited from the oil business, ranching, cattle shipping, and |
---|
23 | 29 | | cotton and grain production, in addition to a thriving public |
---|
24 | 30 | | school system, a modern hospital, and the health services |
---|
25 | 31 | | industry; and |
---|
26 | 32 | | WHEREAS, The history of Jim Wells County is dutifully |
---|
27 | 33 | | preserved at the South Texas Museum, which has been designated a |
---|
28 | 34 | | Texas Historic Landmark; it is indeed fitting that the citizens |
---|
29 | 35 | | of Jim Wells County take pride in their unique heritage as they |
---|
30 | 36 | | celebrate their many contributions to the Lone Star State; now, |

31 | 37 | | therefore, be it |

32 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th |

33 | 39 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 6, 2025, as Jim Wells County |
