6 | 12 | | WHEREAS, The sanctuary of First Pentecostal Church is |

7 | 13 | | located on the site of Old Town, where Henry Mark Blackmon and |
---|
8 | 14 | | Albert McKinney first gathered with members of the community to |
---|
9 | 15 | | hold Bible studies and prayer meetings beginning in 1925; as the |
---|
10 | 16 | | group grew, Mr. Blackmon purchased land and began constructing |
---|
11 | 17 | | the church's first building, which began holding church services |
---|
12 | 18 | | in 1927; and |
---|
13 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Under the guidance and wise stewardship of its |
---|
14 | 20 | | former pastors and the outstanding leadership of its current |
---|
15 | 21 | | pastor, Rev. James Homer Looper, First Pentecostal Church has |
---|
16 | 22 | | ministered faithfully to the spiritual needs of countless |
---|
17 | 23 | | Christians and has continued to play a vital role in the Silsbee |
---|
18 | 24 | | community; and |
---|
19 | 25 | | WHEREAS, The church has endured many challenges and |
---|
20 | 26 | | transitions since it was first organized; the addition of a |
---|
21 | 27 | | gymnasium and housing for elderly members in 1988 served as a |
---|
22 | 28 | | temporary center for services and revivals after the sanctuary |
---|
23 | 29 | | was destroyed in a fire, and the church's devoted congregants |
---|
24 | 30 | | have supported each other in times of hardship and have grown and |
---|
25 | 31 | | rejoiced during times of abundance; and |
---|
26 | 32 | | WHEREAS, The celebration of the church's 100th anniversary |
---|
27 | 33 | | is an opportunity for all to reflect on its rich history and on |
---|
28 | 34 | | the many benefits it has provided to the Silsbee community and |
---|
29 | 35 | | beyond through its ministries over the past century; now, |
---|
30 | 36 | | therefore, be it |

31 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th |
---|
32 | 38 | | Legislature, hereby recognize First Pentecostal Church of |
---|
33 | 39 | | Silsbee on the occasion of its 100th anniversary and extend to |
---|
34 | 40 | | its clergy and members of the congregation best wishes for a |
---|
35 | 41 | | joyous commemorative celebration and for continued success in |
---|
36 | 42 | | their ministry; and, be it further |
---|
37 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

38 | 44 | | the church as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
