8+ WHEREAS, Residents of Panola County are gathering in Austin
9+ on March 11, 2025, to celebrate Panola County Day at the State
10+ Capitol; and
511 WHEREAS, Located in northeastern Texas and forming part of
612 the state's border with Louisiana, Panola County covers more than
7- 800 square miles of forests and rolling plains and is traversed
8- by the Sabine River; the Texas Legislature officially created
9- Panola County on March 30, 1846, and two years later, voters
10- chose Carthage as the county seat; and
11- WHEREAS, It is believed that Judge John Allison, a
12- prominent civic leader, suggested the name Panola, which may be
13- derived from the Cherokee word for cotton, ponolo; the area's
14- rich soil was well suited to the crop, and cotton became the
15- county's main agricultural product; today, the lush forests also
16- make the county a popular destination for hiking, birding, and
17- camping enthusiasts, while anglers enjoy the good fishing waters
18- of Martin Creek Lake and Lake Murvaul; and

23- country music stars Tex Ritter and Jim Reeves; a museum dedicated
24- to Mr. Ritter and a memorial devoted to Mr. Reeves are located in
25- Carthage, as is the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame, which
26- honors the legacies of both of these men, along with other
27- country music legends from the state; and
28- WHEREAS, Named a National Main Street City in Texas,
29- Carthage is also home to Panola College and the historic Esquire
30- Theater, which hosts the Country Music Hayride live show; other
31- popular events taking place in the county seat include the Piney
32- Woods Quilt Festival in April, the annual Classic Country Music
33- Festival Weekend in August, and Potlatch, an art, food, and music
34- festival that takes place in the fall; and

40- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
41- Legislature, hereby recognize March 11, 2025, as Panola County
42- Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the
43- visiting delegation.
