8+ WHEREAS, The girls' basketball team from Monterey High School
9+ in Lubbock closed out an unforgettable season by winning the 2025
10+ University Interscholastic League 5A Division 2 state
511 championship; and
612 WHEREAS, After dropping just five games in the regular
713 season, the Lady Plainsmen claimed the district title and carried
814 their momentum into the playoffs; there, the team bested Wichita
9- Falls Memorial, El Paso Burges, Fort Worth Brewer, and Argyle
10- High Schools to reach the state tournament for the sixth time;
11- facing off against Frisco Memorial High School in the semifinals,
12- Monterey held off its foe's second-half comeback attempt for a
13- 60-57 decision to advance to the state final; and
15+ Falls Memorial, El Paso Burges, Fort Worth Brewer, and Argyle High
16+ Schools to reach the state tournament for the sixth time; facing off
17+ against Frisco Memorial High School in the semifinals, Monterey
18+ held off its foe's second-half comeback attempt for a 60-57
19+ decision to advance to the state final; and
1420 WHEREAS, Monterey took the floor against Liberty Hill High
1521 School on March 1 at the Alamodome in San Antonio; with the state
1622 title on the line, the Lady Plainsmen cranked up the defensive
17- pressure, limiting their opponent to just two points in the
18- second quarter and never looking back; when the final seconds
19- ticked away, the players cut down the nets in celebration of a
20- commanding 64-35 win and the second state crown in program
21- history; with the victory, Monterey finished the year with an
22- outstanding record of 37 wins and 5 losses; and
23- WHEREAS, The Lady Plainsmen were paced by championship
24- game Most Valuable Player Aaliyah Chavez, who was joined by Ari
25- Johnson and Ambrosia Cole on the 5A Division 2 All-Tournament
26- Team; over the course of its campaign, Monterey also received
27- valuable contributions from the other members of the roster:
28- Natalie Sanchez, Shamari Wilkerson, Aaliyah Luna, Khloei Serna,
29- Zaniyah Wilkerson, Ava Longoria, Tri'onna Richardson, and
30- Jasmine Holloway; these determined student-athletes were ably
31- guided by head coach Jill Schneider and assistant coaches Shayla
32- Torres, John Bishop, and Courtney Kelley; and
23+ pressure, limiting their opponent to just two points in the second

31+ and Ambrosia Cole on the 5A Division 2 All-Tournament Team; over the

35- earned a place among the top high school basketball teams in
36- Texas, and they are a source of tremendous pride to their
37- classmates and their many supporters in the Lubbock community;
38- now, therefore, be it
39- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
40- Legislature, hereby congratulate the Monterey High School girls'
41- basketball team on winning the 2025 UIL 5A Division 2 state
42- championship and extend to the players, coaches, and staff
43- sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
40+ commitment to excellence, the Monterey Lady Plainsmen have earned a
41+ place among the top high school basketball teams in Texas, and they
42+ are a source of tremendous pride to their classmates and their many
43+ supporters in the Lubbock community; now, therefore, be it
44+ RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 89th Texas Legislature
45+ hereby congratulate the Monterey High School girls' basketball team
46+ on winning the 2025 UIL 5A Division 2 state championship and extend
47+ to the players, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for
48+ continued success; and, be it further
4449 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
