2	8		WHEREAS, Residents of Matagorda County are gathering in
3		-	Austin on March 18, 2025, to celebrate Matagorda County Day at
4		-	~~the~~ State Capitol; and

5	11		WHEREAS, Matagorda County, one of the oldest counties in
6	12		Texas, derives its name from the Spanish term for "thick brush,"
7		-	referencing the canebrakes that once lined its shores along the ~~Gulf~~
8		-	Coast; located between Galveston and Corpus Christi, 72 miles

9	15		southwest of Houston, the county offers residents easy access to a
10	16		major metropolitan area while preserving the quiet lifestyle of a

12	18		WHEREAS, Bay City, the county seat of Matagorda County, is
13	19		often called the "Gateway to the Great Outdoors"; founded in 1894,
14	20		the city was named for its location in the center of a vast coastal
15	21		prairie, which has been known as "Bay Prairie" since the time of
16	22		Stephen F. Austin; although located 25 miles from the Gulf of
17	23		Mexico, the Port of Bay City was constructed in the 1960s to connect
18	24		the city to the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway via the Colorado River,
19	25		and it proudly serves both the industrial and recreational needs of
20	26		the county; and
21	27		WHEREAS, Matagorda County is known for its abundant wildlife,
22	28		diverse geography, and rich natural resources; the county is
23	29		believed to be home to more species of birds than anywhere else in
24	30		the country during certain times of the year; its marshes, coastal
25	31		prairies, rivers, and forests provide outstanding birding
26	32		opportunities, with three Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail loops
27	33		encompassing 17 observation sites; the Matagorda County Birding
28	34		Nature Center and LCRA Matagorda Bay Nature Park are ideal places to
29	35		learn about birds, gardening, wildlife, and native plants; in
30	36		addition to its avian attractions, the county's bays are teeming
31	37		with redfish, flounder, trout, crab, oysters, and shrimp, and the
32	38		Port of Palacios is one of the largest shrimping ports in Texas,
33	39		home to more than 125 shrimp boats; and
34	40		WHEREAS, The county's economy is driven by ranching, farming,
35	41		and petroleum, with additional economic strength provided by the
36	42		South Texas Project; the county is also home to international
37	43		companies such as Tenaris Bay City, OQ Chemicals Corporation, and
38	44		LyondellBasell, and it has recently welcomed HIF USA, Air Liquide,
39	45		and Roehm America LLC to the area; moreover, Matagorda County is
40	46		seeing significant growth in residential development, with over 800
41	47		housing starts, as well as an influx of new retail outlets and
42	48		restaurants; and
43		-	WHEREAS, Matagorda County is blessed with a rich history
44		-	and abundant natural resources, and its residents may take great
45		-	pride in their county's legacy and bright future; now, therefore,
46		-	be it
47		-	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
48		-	Legislature, hereby recognize March 18, 2025, as Matagorda
49		-	County Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the
50		-	visiting delegation.
