7+ SENATE RESOLUTION
28 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
39 recognize Herbert "Chickdog" Johnson Jr. on his lifelong
410 dedication to the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Nation and his
511 unwavering commitment to public service; and
612 WHEREAS, Born into a proud legacy of leadership as the son
713 of the late Mikko Skalaaba Herbert Johnson Sr. and Deloris
814 Johnson, Herbert "Chickdog" Johnson is a Second Chief and a
915 member of the Deer Clan of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas
1016 who has devoted himself to preserving and strengthening his
1117 tribe; after graduating from Big Sandy High School, he attended
1218 Lon Morris College on a baseball scholarship and studied early
1319 childhood education at Angelina College; and
1420 WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson began his career in public service as
1521 a teacher assistant at the Alabama-Coushatta Head Start; he
1622 completed firefighter training at the Texas A&M Extension
1723 Service Fire School, and for more than 30 years, he has
1824 diligently served the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Nation Volunteer
1925 Fire Department to safeguard his community; and
2026 WHEREAS, Herbert Johnson served as the first president of
2127 the Alabama-Coushatta Youth Council and has continued his
2228 leadership in tribal and civic affairs and an Elder and Clerk of
2329 Session at the Indian Presbyterian Church; he actively supports
2430 numerous youth programs and community initiatives, including the
2531 Lil Dribblers basketball program, pow-wows, and holiday
2632 celebrations, and his Christmas Eve charity drives have become a
2733 cherished local tradition; and
2834 WHEREAS, A trusted voice in the community, Mr. Johnson
2935 provides updates and news to tribal members as host of the KREZ
3036 Podcast, and he serves on the boards of the Tyler, Angelina, and
3137 Polk County Chambers of Commerce as well as the board of Polk
3238 County CARES; and
3339 WHEREAS, A gifted speaker and cultural ambassador, this
3440 esteemed chief frequently serves as Master of Ceremonies at
3541 various celebrations and at pow-wows nationwide, and as Mikko
3642 Istimaatokla, he is committed to preserving the rich language,
3743 history, and culture of the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Nation for
3844 future generations; and
3945 WHEREAS, A devoted husband and father, Mr. Johnson and his
4046 wife, Victoria, are the proud parents of their daughters, Aaliyah
4147 and Stormi, and his deep-rooted love for family extends to his
4248 siblings, nieces, and nephew, all of whom benefit from his
4349 guidance and support; and
4450 WHEREAS, Through his local government leadership and
4551 tireless commitment to public service, Herbert Johnson Jr. has
4652 enriched the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Nation and has made an
4753 enduring impact in his community and state, and it is truly
4854 fitting that he receive special recognition for his dedication to
4955 his culture and for his legacy of service that continues to
5056 inspire all who know him; now, therefore, be it
5157 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
5258 Legislature, hereby commend Herbert "Chickdog" Johnson Jr. on
5359 his outstanding contributions to the Lone Star State and extend
5460 to him best wishes for success in all of his endeavors; and, be it
5561 further
5662 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5763 him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
