9 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Born May 25, 1942, Olen Underwood was an esteemed |

10 | 13 | | Texan who pursued excellence in all his endeavors and improved |

11 | 14 | | the lives of many through his decades of distinguished public |
---|
12 | 15 | | service; and |
---|
13 | 16 | | WHEREAS, A talented athlete, he played defensive end for |
---|
14 | 17 | | The University of Texas at Austin and helped the Longhorns claim |
---|
15 | 18 | | the 1963 national championship and a victory in the 1965 Orange |
---|
16 | 19 | | Bowl; he was selected by the New York Giants in the 1965 National |
---|
17 | 20 | | Football League draft, and he went on to play for the Houston |
---|
18 | 21 | | Oilers from 1966 to 1969; while managing his obligations as a |
---|
19 | 22 | | professional football player, he also earned a law degree from |
---|
20 | 23 | | the University of Houston; and |
---|
21 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Underwood led a rewarding career as a lawyer |
---|
22 | 25 | | in the Houston area, and in 1981, he was appointed judge of |
---|
23 | 26 | | Montgomery County's newly created 284th District Court, where he |
---|
24 | 27 | | set lasting standards for judicial diligence during his six |
---|
25 | 28 | | terms; in 1996, he was appointed to preside over the Second |
---|
26 | 29 | | Administrative Judicial Region of Texas, and he guided the court |
---|
27 | 30 | | with fairness and impartiality until 2022; and |
---|
28 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Led by a conviction to assist troubled youth in |
---|
29 | 32 | | Montgomery County, in 1993 Judge Underwood established the |
---|
30 | 33 | | Student Transition and Recovery Program to connect at-risk |
---|
31 | 34 | | middle school students with caring mentors; the county honored |
---|
32 | 35 | | his work and contributions to the community by establishing the |
---|
33 | 36 | | Olen Underwood Juvenile Justice Center; and |
---|
34 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Olen Underwood inspired his friends and loved |
---|
35 | 38 | | ones through his devotion to his faith, his family, and his |
---|
36 | 39 | | fellow citizens; he was beloved by many, and Texans will continue |
---|
37 | 40 | | to benefit from his legacy of public service long into the |
---|
38 | 41 | | future; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th |
---|
40 | 43 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
41 | 44 | | family of the Honorable Olen Underwood; and, be it further |
---|
42 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
43 | 46 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
44 | 47 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
