7+ SENATE RESOLUTION
58 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
69 commemorates the life of the Honorable Olen Underwood, a
710 cherished member of the Montgomery County community who died
811 February 28, 2025, at the age of 82; and
912 WHEREAS, Born May 25, 1942, Olen Underwood was an esteemed
1013 Texan who pursued excellence in all his endeavors and improved
1114 the lives of many through his decades of distinguished public
1215 service; and
1316 WHEREAS, A talented athlete, he played defensive end for
1417 The University of Texas at Austin and helped the Longhorns claim
1518 the 1963 national championship and a victory in the 1965 Orange
1619 Bowl; he was selected by the New York Giants in the 1965 National
1720 Football League draft, and he went on to play for the Houston
1821 Oilers from 1966 to 1969; while managing his obligations as a
1922 professional football player, he also earned a law degree from
2023 the University of Houston; and
2124 WHEREAS, Mr. Underwood led a rewarding career as a lawyer
2225 in the Houston area, and in 1981, he was appointed judge of
2326 Montgomery County's newly created 284th District Court, where he
2427 set lasting standards for judicial diligence during his six
2528 terms; in 1996, he was appointed to preside over the Second
2629 Administrative Judicial Region of Texas, and he guided the court
2730 with fairness and impartiality until 2022; and
2831 WHEREAS, Led by a conviction to assist troubled youth in
2932 Montgomery County, in 1993 Judge Underwood established the
3033 Student Transition and Recovery Program to connect at-risk
3134 middle school students with caring mentors; the county honored
3235 his work and contributions to the community by establishing the
3336 Olen Underwood Juvenile Justice Center; and
3437 WHEREAS, Olen Underwood inspired his friends and loved
3538 ones through his devotion to his faith, his family, and his
3639 fellow citizens; he was beloved by many, and Texans will continue
3740 to benefit from his legacy of public service long into the
3841 future; now, therefore, be it
3942 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
4043 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4144 family of the Honorable Olen Underwood; and, be it further
4245 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4346 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4447 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4548 memory of Olen Underwood.
