28 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Corsicana and throughout Navarro
39 County are gathering at the State Capitol on March 18, 2025, to
4- celebrate the role their region has played in the colorful story
5- of Texas; and
10+ celebrate the role their region has played in the colorful story of
11+ Texas; and
612 WHEREAS, Established with the approval of the state
7- legislature on April 25, 1846, Navarro County was named after
8- José Antonio Navarro, a signer of the Texas Declaration of
9- Independence; and
10- WHEREAS, In 1848, a 100-acre plot of land was donated for
11- the creation of a county seat, with the name, Corsicana, chosen
12- by Mr. Navarro to honor his father's birthplace on the isle of
13+ legislature on April 25, 1846, Navarro County was named after José
14+ Antonio Navarro, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence;
15+ and
16+ WHEREAS, In 1848, a 100-acre plot of land was donated for the
17+ creation of a county seat, with the name, Corsicana, chosen by
18+ Mr. Navarro to honor his father's birthplace on the isle of
1319 Corsica; the community developed as a trading and shipping center
14- following the completion of the Houston and Texas Central
15- Railroad in 1871; and
16- WHEREAS, With Corsicana experiencing substantial
17- population growth, an effort was made to drill for groundwater
18- beneath the city's soil in 1894; this led to the discovery of
19- oil, and consequently, the first oil boom in the state of
20- Texas, forever changing the economy and destiny of Navarro
21- County; more than 200 million barrels of oil have since been
22- pumped from the county, which claims the longest continuous
23- oil flow in Texas history; and
24- WHEREAS, Today, petroleum, diversified manufacturing,
25- and agriculture continue to bolster the economy; among the
26- varied crops grown in the region's fertile black loam are corn,
27- cotton, hay, wheat, sorghum, and sunflowers, and local ranches
28- raise beef and dairy cattle, poultry, goats, sheep, and
29- horses; and

3236 outstanding and affordable educational opportunities provided by
3337 Navarro College; the community thrives as a major distribution
34- point and is home to a Russell Stover candy factory and the
35- Navarro Pecan Company, one of the largest pecan-shelling
36- facilities in the world; the celebrated Collin Street Bakery is
37- also a favorite of visitors passing through town, and orders are
38- received for its delectable fruitcake from every corner of the
39- globe; and
40- WHEREAS, Enhancing the quality of life in the area,
41- outlets for recreation are found at nearby Navarro Mills Lake,
42- Lake Halbert, and Richland Chambers Reservoir; in addition,
43- the county's fascinating history is preserved at such
44- attractions as the Pearce Museum and Pioneer Village;
45- moreover, every spring the Corsicana Derrick Days festival
46- celebrates the area oil and gas industry and its economic
47- benefits; and
48- WHEREAS, The resourceful citizens of Navarro County have
49- made many notable contributions to the cultural fabric of
50- Texas, and they take justifiable pride in the rich heritage and
51- unique amenities that make their region such a notable part of
52- the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
53- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
54- Legislature, hereby recognize March 18, 2025, as Corsicana/Navarro
55- County Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the
56- visiting delegation.
