8+ WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to
9+ a close with the passing of John Lawrence Wilborn Sr. of Marshall on
10+ February 1, 2025, at the age of 92; and
811 WHEREAS, Born in Marshall on June 9, 1932, John Wilborn was
912 the son of Ella Mae Scott and Julius Wilborn; a 1949 graduate of
1013 H.B. Pemberton High School, he went on to earn degrees from Wiley
1114 University and Texas Southern University; he served his country
1215 during the Korean War as a member of the United States Army; and
1316 WHEREAS, In 1956, Mr. Wilborn met his future wife, Kathryn
1417 Thompson, and they married a year later; the couple were blessed
1518 with three children, John Wilborn Jr., Jeffrey Wilborn, and
1619 Stephanie Wilborn Myers; and
1720 WHEREAS, Mr. Wilborn had a long and rewarding career in
18- education, working as a teacher for nearly three decades and as
19- an administrator for eight years; in 1991, he retired from
20- Marshall Independent School District as deputy principal at Sam
21- Houston Middle School; and
22- WHEREAS, A dedicated public servant, Mr. Wilborn
23- represented District 5 in Marshall on the city council for 24
24- years; from 1992 to 1994, he served as mayor of Marshall,
25- becoming only the second African American to hold the office; as
26- mayor, he worked to integrate administrative positions into
27- municipal government; he also served on the Marshall Economic
28- Development Board of Directors for two terms; in addition, he was
29- an active member of Bethesda Baptist Church; and
30- WHEREAS, Although John Wilborn will be deeply missed, he
31- has left his family and friends with a wealth of memories that
32- they will forever treasure; now, therefore, be it
33- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
34- Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of John Lawrence
35- Wilborn Sr. and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn his
36- passing; and, be it further
