28 WHEREAS, The University of Texas at Dallas has greatly
3- benefited from the visionary leadership of President Richard
4- C. Benson, who has guided the institution over the past eight
5- years; and

612 WHEREAS, In his role at UTD's helm, Dr. Benson has launched
713 ambitious fundraising endeavors, including the New Dimensions
8- campaign, which has amassed more than $415 million to date; he
9- has also overseen tens of millions of dollars in research
10- expenditures, and his tenure has coincided with the advancement
11- of several significant campus projects, including the opening of
12- the Texas Instruments Biomedical Engineering and Sciences
13- Building and the breaking of ground on the 12-acre Athenaeum
14- cultural district; and
15- WHEREAS, Dr. Benson earned his bachelor's degree in
16- aerospace and mechanical science from Princeton University in
17- 1973, his master's degree in mechanical engineering from the
18- University of Virginia in 1974, and his doctorate in mechanical
19- engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in
20- 1977; prior to the start of his career in higher education, he was
21- employed with the Xerox Corporation; in 1980, he became a
22- professor of mechanical engineering at the University of
23- Rochester, where he later served as an associate dean and chair
24- of the Department of Mechanical Engineering; and

29- from 2005 to 2016, during which time that department achieved
30- record growth; and
31- WHEREAS, Dr. Benson has been honored on many occasions by
32- the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, of which he has
33- been a Fellow since 1998; he received ASME's Henry Hess Award in
34- 1984, and in 2009, he was elected to a three-year term on the
35- organization's board of governors; he has further held editorial
36- positions with several ASME publications, including its Journal
37- of Applied Mechanics; and

41- higher learning, and his achievements will continue to be
42- appreciated for many years to come; now, therefore, be it
43- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
44- Legislature, hereby honor President Richard C. Benson for his
45- outstanding service to The University of Texas at Dallas and the
46- field of higher education and extend to him sincere best wishes
47- for the future; and, be it further
44+ first-rate research university and a premier institution of higher
45+ learning, and his achievements will continue to be appreciated for
46+ many years to come; now, therefore, be it
47+ RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 89th Texas Legislature
48+ hereby honor President Richard C. Benson for his outstanding
49+ service to The University of Texas at Dallas and the field of higher
50+ education and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and,
51+ be it further
4852 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
