7+ SENATE RESOLUTION
28 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
39 welcome residents of McAllen who are gathering at the State
410 Capitol on February 4, 2025, to celebrate this vibrant South
511 Texas community; and
612 WHEREAS, McAllen traces its history to 1797, when Spanish
713 settler Jose Manuel Gomez founded the Santa Anita Ranch in what
814 is now southern Hidalgo County; the ranch grew in size and was
915 eventually inherited by Mr. Gomez's great-granddaughter, Salome
1016 Balli, who married John McAllen; together, they continued to add
1117 to the property and renamed it McAllen Ranch; and
12- WHEREAS, In 1904, the Saint Louis, Brownsville and
13- Mexico Railroad arrived, and that same year, Mr. McAllen and
14- other early settlers formed the McAllen Townsite Company and
15- established a community named for John McAllen; other
16- developers founded East McAllen in 1907, and the two towns
17- eventually merged and became home to a growing number of
18- businesses, churches, residences, and a newspaper; by 1920,
19- the city had a population of some 6,000 residents; and
20- WHEREAS, Over the last five decades, McAllen has grown into
21- a thriving center in the Rio Grande Valley for commerce,

2935 ranked McAllen in the top 50 best places to live in the United
3036 States and as the second-best place to live in Texas for
3137 2024-2025; the McAllen National Incident-Based Reporting System
3238 crime report recorded the lowest crime rate in the last 37 years
3339 at the end of 2024; and
34- WHEREAS, McAllen is renowned for its natural beauty and
35- is home to Quinta Mazatlan, a Spanish revival estate set amid

3642 sprawling tropical gardens; this unique conference and events
3743 center encompasses quiet trails winding through more than 15

4046 WHEREAS, The city also features a rich array of cultural
4147 attractions and prides itself on being a destination city with
4248 more than 800 events held annually, and in 2024, the city was
43- named an IFEA World Festival and Event City for the third
44- time; the McAllen Holiday Parade, presented by H-E-B and
45- powered by Bert Ogden Auto Group, has been a popular and
46- highly acclaimed event for many years, and other world-class
47- events held in the city include the McAllen Public Library's
48- World Languages Festival and South Texas Book Festival, the
49- South Pole Illuminated Festival, MXLAN Music and Arts
50- Festival, the McAllen Marathon Scott Crane Running Series,
51- Planta Nativa at Quinta Mazatlan, and the McAllen Convention
52- Center's CarFest; and

5560 indeed take great pride in the prominent role that their city
5661 continues to play in the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
5762 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
5863 Legislature, hereby recognize February 4, 2025, as McAllen Day at
5964 the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere
6065 best wishes for a memorable visit to Austin; and, be it further
6166 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
6267 honor of this special occasion.
