2	8		WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	9		recognize Bishop James Anthony Tamayo on his years of outstanding
4	10		service as bishop of the Diocese of Laredo and in honor of the
5	11		25th anniversary of the diocese; and
6	12		WHEREAS, In 2000, Pope John Paul II appointed Bishop James
7	13		Anthony Tamayo to guide the newly created Diocese of Laredo to
8	14		meet the unique pastoral needs of South Texas; prior to this
9	15		appointment, Bishop Tamayo faithfully ministered to parishes in
10	16		the area as the first Episcopal Vicar of the Western Vicarate of
11	17		the Diocese of Corpus Christi, and he was appointed auxiliary
12	18		bishop of the Diocese of Galveston-Houston in 1993 and served
13	19		diligently in this role until his installation as bishop in
14	20		Laredo; and
15	21		WHEREAS, During his 25 years of leadership of the Diocese
16	22		of Laredo, Bishop Tamayo has worked to build a strong and unified
17	23		diocese amidst a diverse and growing population of parishioners;
18	24		he has promoted a culture of faith that prioritizes outreach and
19	25		community service, and he has guided the development of numerous
20	26		initiatives that promote social justice and education for
21	27		Catholics in the region; and
22	28		WHEREAS, The celebratory year commemorating the Diocese of
23	29		Laredo's 25th anniversary offers a fitting opportunity to
24	30		reflect on its many successes and on the compassionate example
25	31		and devoted stewardship provided by Bishop Tamayo throughout his
26	32		exceptional tenure of leadership; his distinguished service has
27	33		been a valuable asset to the Diocese of Laredo, and he has
28	34		remained tireless in his commitment to serving the parishes and
29	35		communities of South Texas; now, therefore, be it
30	36		RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
31	37		Legislature, hereby commend Bishop James Anthony Tamayo on his
32	38		exemplary leadership of the Diocese of Laredo throughout its
33	39		25-year history and extend to the many clergy and faithful
34	40		parishioners of the diocese best wishes for the future and for a
35	41		memorable 25th anniversary celebration; and, be it further
36	42		RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
37	43		the Diocese of Laredo as an expression of esteem from the Texas
38	44		Senate.
