8+ WHEREAS, Proud residents of Montague County are gathering in
9+ Austin on March 26, 2025, in celebration of Montague County Day at
10+ the State Capitol; and
511 WHEREAS, Situated on the Red River in the Western Cross
612 Timbers of North Central Texas, this region was originally
7- inhabited by the Comanche, Wichita, and Kiowa Indians; in 1858,
8- the county was organized from portions of Cooke County and named
9- for Daniel Montague, surveyor of the Fannin Land District and
10- veteran of the Mexican War; when federal troops withdrew from the
11- area during the Civil War, Indian raids caused the population to
12- decline until the 1870s, when an organized effort was made to
13- drive native tribes from the county; by the early 1880s, the
14- population had grown to 11,000 people; and
13+ inhabited by the Comanche, Wichita, and Kiowa Indians; in 1858, the

21- cotton production, and in the 20th century, it expanded to
22- incorporate other crops, as well as oil and gas production; and

27- Nocona, where the Nocona Boot Company was established in 1887;
28- residents and visitors alike benefit from the recreational
29- opportunities afforded by Lake Nocona and Amon G. Carter Lake,
30- and outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the area for activities such
31- as boating, fishing, and hunting; it also hosts a number of
32- annual events, among them the Chisholm Trail Rodeo, the Jim Bowie
33- Days Rodeo, and the Chicken and Bread Days Heritage Festival; and
30+ people, and its economy benefits from the retail, health care, and
31+ educational services industries; notable communities include the

38- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
39- Legislature, hereby recognize March 26, 2025, as Montague County
40- Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting
41- delegation.
