28 WHEREAS, Congregants from Brentwood Baptist Church in
39 Houston are gathering in Austin on March 25, 2025, to visit the
410 State Capitol; and
511 WHEREAS, On June 17, 1965, Brentwood Baptist was founded by
612 12 members who held meetings at a local elementary school until a
713 parcel of land could be purchased; in its early years, the church
814 benefited from the leadership of pastors Dr. Donald Carroll and
9- Dr. Herbert Nash; the Reverend Dr. Joe Samuel Ratliff was
10- elected pastor of the congregation in 1980, and he has since
11- guided it through more than four decades of substantial growth;
12- his wife, Doris Ernestine Gardner Ratliff, serves alongside him
13- as the first lady of the church; and
14- WHEREAS, Under Reverend Ratliff's leadership, the church
15- saw the addition of several new buildings throughout the 1980s,
15+ Dr. Herbert Nash; the Reverend Dr. Joe Samuel Ratliff was elected
16+ pastor of the congregation in 1980, and he has since guided it
17+ through more than four decades of substantial growth; his wife,
18+ Doris Ernestine Gardner Ratliff, serves alongside him as the first
19+ lady of the church; and
20+ WHEREAS, Under Reverend Ratliff's leadership, the church saw
21+ the addition of several new buildings throughout the 1980s,
1622 including a prayer chapel and a worship center, and in 1997, the
1723 Brentwood Cottages were constructed to serve as transitional
18- housing for individuals living with HIV/AIDS; by 2000, the
19- church's membership had grown from 500 to 12,000, and it had
20- acquired 105 additional acres of land; moreover, the Doris
21- Gardner Ratliff Center for Child Development was completed in
22- 2000, and the 75,000-square-foot Joe Samuel Ratliff Lifelong
23- Learning Center was added in 2001; and
24+ housing for individuals living with HIV/AIDS; by 2000, the church's
25+ membership had grown from 500 to 12,000, and it had acquired 105
26+ additional acres of land; moreover, the Doris Gardner Ratliff
27+ Center for Child Development was completed in 2000, and the
28+ 75,000-square-foot Joe Samuel Ratliff Lifelong Learning Center was

2430 WHEREAS, This venerable religious institution has played a
2531 vital role in the community, providing its members with myriad
26- opportunities for spiritual growth, fellowship, and outreach;
27- its 75 ministries include the Brentwood Community Foundation,
28- which works to improve the quality of life of the greater Houston
29- community, and the church also has special programs for
30- congregants of all ages; and

32- Brentwood Baptist Church for spiritual guidance through the
33- years, and it is a pleasure to join in welcoming the congregation
34- to the State Capitol; now, therefore, be it
35- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
36- Legislature, hereby honor Brentwood Baptist Church and extend to
37- its members sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable
38- stay in Austin; and, be it further
38+ Brentwood Baptist Church for spiritual guidance through the years,
39+ and it is a pleasure to join in welcoming the congregation to the
40+ State Capitol; now, therefore, be it
41+ RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 89th Texas Legislature
42+ hereby honor Brentwood Baptist Church and extend to its members
43+ sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin;
44+ and, be it further
