8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
---|
9 | 9 | | recognize residents of Laredo as they gather at the State Capitol |
---|
10 | 10 | | to celebrate Laredo Day on February 4, 2025; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, San Agustin de Laredo was founded in 1755 as an |
---|
12 | 12 | | outpost for the Spanish Empire; the city became part of Mexico |
---|
13 | 13 | | after gaining independence from Spain in 1821, and nearly two |
---|
14 | 14 | | decades later, it was named capital of the Republic of the Rio |
---|
15 | 15 | | Grande; in 1846, Laredo officially became part of Texas and was |
---|
16 | 16 | | subsequently chosen as the Webb County seat; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Since its inception, Laredo has served as an |
---|
18 | 18 | | important crossing point on the Rio Grande and a trading center |
---|
19 | 19 | | for livestock, hides, and wool; its role in international trade |
---|
20 | 20 | | expanded with the arrival of the railroad in 1881 and the |
---|
21 | 21 | | development of the Zona Libre, or free trade zone, along the |
---|
22 | 22 | | border between the United States and Mexico; the city's economy |
---|
23 | 23 | | was bolstered by coal mining, onion farming, and the discovery of |
---|
24 | 24 | | oil and gas fields; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, This bustling gateway city is the largest inland |
---|
26 | 26 | | port along the United States-Mexico border and one of the top |
---|
27 | 27 | | United States Customs districts in the nation; its citizens |
---|
28 | 28 | | benefit from the retail, health services, and hospitality |
---|
29 | 29 | | industries, and as the home of Texas A&M International |
---|
30 | 30 | | University, two campuses of Laredo College, and The University of |
---|
31 | 31 | | Texas Education and Research Center at Laredo, its emphasis on |
---|
32 | 32 | | higher education is evident; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Visitors and residents enjoy such area |
---|
34 | 34 | | attractions as the historic San Agustin Cathedral, the Republic |
---|
35 | 35 | | of the Rio Grande Museum, the Laredo Center for the Arts, and |
---|
36 | 36 | | citywide events like Washington's Birthday Celebration; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Boasting a rich heritage and a vibrant |
---|
38 | 38 | | international culture, the people of Laredo may indeed take great |
---|
39 | 39 | | pride in the role their community continues to play in the story |
---|
40 | 40 | | of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
---|
41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th |
---|
42 | 42 | | Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Laredo and extend a |
---|
43 | 43 | | warm welcome to the visiting delegation; and, be it further |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
---|
45 | 45 | | honor of this special occasion. |
