77 SENATE RESOLUTION
88 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
99 recognize residents of Laredo as they gather at the State Capitol
1010 to celebrate Laredo Day on February 4, 2025; and
1111 WHEREAS, San Agustin de Laredo was founded in 1755 as an
1212 outpost for the Spanish Empire; the city became part of Mexico
1313 after gaining independence from Spain in 1821, and nearly two
1414 decades later, it was named capital of the Republic of the Rio
1515 Grande; in 1846, Laredo officially became part of Texas and was
1616 subsequently chosen as the Webb County seat; and
1717 WHEREAS, Since its inception, Laredo has served as an
1818 important crossing point on the Rio Grande and a trading center
1919 for livestock, hides, and wool; its role in international trade
2020 expanded with the arrival of the railroad in 1881 and the
2121 development of the Zona Libre, or free trade zone, along the
2222 border between the United States and Mexico; the city's economy
2323 was bolstered by coal mining, onion farming, and the discovery of
2424 oil and gas fields; and
2525 WHEREAS, This bustling gateway city is the largest inland
2626 port along the United States-Mexico border and one of the top
2727 United States Customs districts in the nation; its citizens
2828 benefit from the retail, health services, and hospitality
2929 industries, and as the home of Texas A&M International
3030 University, two campuses of Laredo College, and The University of
3131 Texas Education and Research Center at Laredo, its emphasis on
3232 higher education is evident; and
3333 WHEREAS, Visitors and residents enjoy such area
3434 attractions as the historic San Agustin Cathedral, the Republic
3535 of the Rio Grande Museum, the Laredo Center for the Arts, and
3636 citywide events like Washington's Birthday Celebration; and
3737 WHEREAS, Boasting a rich heritage and a vibrant
3838 international culture, the people of Laredo may indeed take great
3939 pride in the role their community continues to play in the story
4040 of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
4242 Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Laredo and extend a
4343 warm welcome to the visiting delegation; and, be it further
4444 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
4545 honor of this special occasion.
