2	8		WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	9		recognize Kier Le'Juan Spates for his outstanding work in making
4	10		a difference in the lives of those living with sickle-cell
5	11		disease; and
6	12		WHEREAS, Kier Spates is an accomplished performer and
7	13		comedian who has appeared in venues around the world with such
8	14		artists as Aretha Franklin, Lyfe Jennings, Music Soul Child, and
9	15		Anita Baker; he has performed for military personnel on USO
10	16		tours, and he has enjoyed great success and earned an Emmy
11	17		nomination as a writer for Steve Harvey's television show; and
12	18		WHEREAS, Mr. Spates founded the Kier's Hope Foundation in
13	19		Atlanta in 2015 to raise awareness of the issues facing children
14	20		and adults with sickle-cell disease; now based in Dallas, the
15	21		foundation has played a vital role in raising Texans' awareness
16	22		of the effects of the disease; and
17	23		WHEREAS, Mr. Spates has served as the celebrity ambassador
18	24		for the Sickle Cell Disease Society of America and has been an
19	25		invaluable supporter to those facing a lifetime of managing the
20	26		condition; and
21	27		WHEREAS, Raising awareness of sickle-cell disease is
22	28		important for the health and safety of Texans across the state,
23	29		and it is truly fitting that special recognition be given to Kier
24	30		Spates and his foundation; now, therefore, be it
25	31		RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
26	32		Legislature, hereby commend Kier Le'Juan Spates for his
27	33		exceptional work on behalf of those suffering from sickle-cell
28	34		disease; and, be it further
29	35		RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
30	36		honor of Kier Spates and his foundation.
