8+ WHEREAS, The Most Reverend Joe S. Vásquez, archbishop of the
9+ Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, is serving as Pastor of the Day
10+ for the Texas Senate on April 1, 2025; and
511 WHEREAS, Installed as auxiliary bishop in 2002, Archbishop
612 Vásquez served the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston as the vicar
713 general/chancellor, overseeing administrative operations of the
8- archdiocese, which is the largest in the state and the 11th
9- largest in the country; he also held the roles of moderator of the
10- curia, secretariat director for administration, and episcopal
11- vicar for Hispanics; in 2010, he became the fifth bishop of the
12- Diocese of Austin, and after 15 years of dedicated service, he
13- was installed as the ninth archbishop of Galveston-Houston on
14- March 25, 2025; and
15- WHEREAS, Archbishop Vásquez further contributes to his
16- faith community as a consultant to the United States Conference
17- of Catholic Bishops Committee on Pro-Life Activities and as lead
14+ archdiocese, which is the largest in the state and the 11th largest
15+ in the country; he also held the roles of moderator of the curia,
16+ secretariat director for administration, and episcopal vicar for

2530 WHEREAS, Born in Stamford, Archbishop Vásquez studied
2631 theology at the University of St. Thomas in Houston and continued
2732 his education in Rome at the Gregorian University, North American
2833 College; he was ordained as a priest for the Diocese of San Angelo
2934 in 1984 and went on to serve as associate pastor of St. Joseph
30- Parish in Odessa, pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Fort Stockton,
31- and pastor of St. Joseph Parish in San Angelo; and
32- WHEREAS, Exemplifying the highest standards of his
33- vocation, Joe Vásquez has inspired countless Texans through his
34- messages of faith and goodwill, and it is a great privilege to
35- welcome him to the State Capitol; now, therefore, be it
36- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
37- Legislature, hereby honor the Most Reverend Joe S. Vásquez for
38- his service as Pastor of the Day and congratulate him on his
39- installation as archbishop of Galveston-Houston; and, be it
