28 WHEREAS, Residents of Del Rio and Val Verde County are
39 gathering in Austin on April 2, 2025, to celebrate Val Verde
410 County-Del Rio Day at the State Capitol; and
511 WHEREAS, The brushlands along the Rio Grande were first
612 inhabited more than 6,000 years ago by native peoples whose cave
7- paintings are still visible; the city of Del Rio traces its
8- origins to 1868, when the community of San Felipe Del Rio was
9- established, and Val Verde County was organized in 1885; that
10- same year, the colorful Judge Roy Bean was elected justice of the
11- peace in Langtry, where he became known as "the Law West of the
12- Pecos," making his distinctive rulings from the Jersey Lilly
13- Saloon; and
14- WHEREAS, Important employers in the county include
15- Laughlin Air Force Base, the U.S. Border Patrol, and various
16- maquiladoras; tourism and trade with Mexico are also integral to
17- the local economy; opportunities for boating, fishing, birding,
18- and hiking are found at the Amistad National Recreation Area, and
19- the Whitehead Memorial Museum in Del Rio and the Judge Roy Bean
20- Visitor Center in Langtry attract visitors interested in the
21- heritage of the county's frontier days; and
22- WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history as they work to
23- build an even brighter future, the people of Val Verde County may
24- take great pride in the important role their unique area
25- continues to play in the story of the Lone Star State; now,
26- therefore, be it
27- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
28- Legislature, hereby recognize April 2, 2025, as Val Verde
29- County-Del Rio Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome
30- to the visiting delegation.
