88 WHEREAS, Hyperemesis Gravidarum Awareness Day is taking
99 place on May 15, 2025; and
1010 WHEREAS, Established in 2012, the observance promotes better
1111 understanding of hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe form of nausea
1212 and vomiting that occurs during pregnancy; patients with the
1313 condition may experience significant weight loss, electrolyte
1414 imbalance, dehydration, and debility and are at an increased risk
1515 for preterm labor; moreover, affected newborns may suffer from low
1616 birth weight and neurodevelopmental issues; and
1717 WHEREAS, It is vital that patients with hyperemesis
1818 gravidarum receive tailored care as soon as they experience
1919 symptoms, which may begin as early as the fourth week of their
2020 pregnancy; and
2121 WHEREAS, HG is an underdiagnosed condition that affects
2222 nearly 6 million women worldwide, and in 2023, some 900 patients in
2323 Texas received treatment for the disorder; it is the number one
2424 cause of hospitalization in early pregnancy as well as the number
2525 two cause of hospitalization overall in pregnancy, resulting in an
2626 annual national cost of $3 billion; and
2727 WHEREAS, Hyperemesis gravidarum poses a serious risk to
2828 expectant mothers and their developing babies, and Hyperemesis
2929 Gravidarum Awareness Day serves as a means of educating the public
3030 about the condition, calling attention to the need for more
3131 research, and uniting Texans in their commitment to improving
3232 outcomes for patients; now, therefore, be it
3333 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 89th Texas Legislature
3434 hereby recognize May 15, 2025, as Hyperemesis Gravidarum Awareness
3535 Day and urge all Texans to learn more about the condition.
