7+ SENATE RESOLUTION
28 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
39 recognize the fourth annual Texas HBCU Conference Series,
410 Democracy Schools, which is taking place at Huston-Tillotson
511 University in Austin on April 4 and 5, 2025; and
612 WHEREAS, Established at Huston-Tillotson University in
713 2022, the conference series emerged from the efforts of a
814 campus-wide leadership development and civic engagement
915 initiative, Public Leadership in Faith and Social Justice
1016 Traditions; students in the program organized intentional small
1117 group discussions, drawing inspiration from a century of
1218 grassroots activism; the Freedom Schools of the civil rights era
1319 inform the concept of Democracy Schools as a framework to explore
14- civic capacity building and community institutions over time; and
15- WHEREAS, The conference brings together students, faculty,
16- and staff from the state's Historically Black Colleges and
17- Universities, as well as interested community partners; scholars
18- and professionals explore a cultural view of democracy and
19- citizenship with perspectives from a broad range of disciplines
20- and fields, including literature, science, media, humanities,
21- and the arts; and
20+ civic capacity building and community institutions over time;

22+ WHEREAS, The conference brings together students,
23+ faculty, and staff from the state's Historically Black Colleges
24+ and Universities, as well as interested community partners;
25+ scholars and professionals explore a cultural view of democracy
26+ and citizenship with perspectives from a broad range of
27+ disciplines and fields, including literature, science, media,
28+ humanities, and the arts; and
2229 WHEREAS, In its fourth year, the conference will feature a
2330 theme focused on civic power and the legacy of Historically Black
2431 Colleges and Universities and Black educational history and
2532 practice; presenters will examine the collective ability of
2633 civil society groups, organizations, and institutions to
2734 strengthen and renew democracy; and
2835 WHEREAS, The conference series highlights the vital role
2936 Historically Black Colleges and Universities have long played in
3037 developing strong, meaningful citizenship that contributes to
3138 the advancement of democracy in our state and nation; now,
3239 therefore, be it
3340 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
3441 Legislature, hereby recognize April 4, 2025, as Texas HBCU Day
3542 and extend to all participating in the Texas HBCU Conference
3643 Series sincere best wishes for a meaningful and productive event;
3744 and, be it further
3845 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
3946 honor of this special occasion.
