28 WHEREAS, John Sharp is retiring as chancellor of The Texas
3- A&M University System in 2025, following the longest tenure at
4- the helm in the institution's history; and
5- WHEREAS, Named chancellor in 2011, Mr. Sharp has
6- transformed the System, which has grown to include 11
7- universities and eight state agencies, and his efforts have
8- earned him a place alongside such legendary Texas A&M leaders as
9- Sul Ross and James Earl Rudder; he has raised the national
10- profile of the flagship institution in College Station, which is
11- now the nation's largest university with more than 79,000
12- students; in 2013, the System acquired Texas Wesleyan
13- University's law school, which became the Texas A&M University
14- School of Law and climbed more than 100 places in just a decade to
15- rank 26th among the law programs in the country; Chancellor Sharp
16- oversaw nearly $12 billion in construction and the conversion of
17- the Riverside Campus into Texas A&M-RELLIS, a 2,400-acre
18- high-tech hub for defense research and testing; moreover, he
19- energized Aggie football with a nearly half-billion-dollar
20- expansion of Kyle Field and a move to the Southeastern
21- Conference; athletic facilities throughout the System have been
22- enhanced; and

2732 Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, placing them
2833 among an elite group of leading research institutions and
2934 highlighting their commitment to innovation; the System has also
3035 seen an exponential increase in the number of faculty members who
3136 are members of the National Academies; and
32- WHEREAS, Addressing the state's increasing energy needs,
33- the System has announced plans to provide a platform for
34- companies to test the latest nuclear reactors for increased power
35- supply; further, the System continues to be part of the team that
36- manages the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico; in
37- addition, it was chosen in 2024 by the U.S. Department of
38- Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration as part of a
39- group to manage and operate the Pantex Plant, which maintains the
40- nation's nuclear weapons stockpile; and
41- WHEREAS, Chancellor Sharp brought to his role more than
42- three decades of experience in public office; he was elected to
43- the Texas House in 1978 and four years later, he won a seat in the
44- Texas Senate; subsequently, he was elected to the Texas Railroad

53- University; he was named a Distinguished Alumnus of TAMU in 2018;

59- to come; now, therefore, be it
60- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
61- Legislature, hereby honor John Sharp for his service as
62- chancellor of The Texas A&M University System and extend to him
63- sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
62+ accomplishments will yield ever-increasing benefits in the years to
63+ come; now, therefore, be it
64+ RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 89th Texas Legislature
65+ hereby honor John Sharp for his service as chancellor of The Texas
66+ A&M University System and extend to him sincere best wishes for the
67+ future; and, be it further
