7+ WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close on May
8+ 3, 2024, with the passing of Clyde Vance Dunnam of Waco at the age
9+ of 94; and
810 WHEREAS, Born in Waco on November 6, 1929, Vance Dunnam
911 grew up in Speegleville and graduated from Waco High School; he
1012 earned his bachelor's degree from Baylor University in 1951 and
1113 his juris doctor degree from Baylor Law School the following
1214 year; and
1315 WHEREAS, After obtaining his admission to the bar and a
1416 short stint working for a Houston oil company, Mr. Dunnam joined
1517 his father and brother at Dunnam & Dunnam, LLP, where he worked
1618 for seven decades; over the course of his career, he earned a
1719 reputation as one of the most skilled and successful trial
1820 attorneys in Central Texas; he served as a mentor to hundreds of
1921 colleagues and further contributed to his professional community
2022 as president of the McLennan County Junior Bar Association and
2123 the Waco-McLennan County Bar Association; through the years, he
2224 had the pleasure of practicing with a number of family members,
2325 and he worked up until the last weeks of his life; and
2426 WHEREAS, In 1952, Mr. Dunnam married Vicki Hohertz, and
2527 they shared in the joy of raising three children, Vance, Cathy,
2628 and Jim; after his wife's death in 1995, he found love again with
2729 Merrilee Lafferty Harmon, whom he wed in 1997; with the passing
2830 years, he delighted in watching his cherished family grow to
2931 include numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and
3032 WHEREAS, Active in his community, Mr. Dunnam held
3133 leadership positions in several organizations, including the
3234 Scottish Rite, the York Rite, and the Karem Shrine as well as the
3335 Waco Jaycees and the Knights of Pythias; he was also a man of
3436 faith and a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, where he
3537 taught Sunday school for many years; in his leisure time, he
3638 enjoyed cattle and hay ranching, sailing, riding his motorcycle,
3739 fly-fishing, beekeeping, hunting, and any time that he could
3840 spend with his children and grandchildren; and
3941 WHEREAS, Mr. Dunnam especially took pride in the history
4042 and success of Dunnam & Dunnam, LLP, where he worked for most of
4143 his career, even up until a few weeks before his passing, and he
4244 truly loved the fact that he successfully instilled the same
4345 pride in his children and grandchildren; and
4446 WHEREAS, Mr. Dunnam could not have been more loyal to his
4547 lifelong friends and employees, no matter their politics, race,
4648 or religion; in addition, he also worked tirelessly to mend all
4749 fences with those who might have become estranged; and
4850 WHEREAS, Although Vance Dunnam is deeply missed, memories
4951 of his wisdom, his sense of humor, and his generosity remain to
5052 comfort and inspire those he leaves behind; now, therefore, be it
5153 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
5254 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Clyde Vance Dunnam
5355 and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
5456 wife, Merrilee L. Harmon; to his children, Vance Dunnam Jr. and
5557 his wife, Irma, Cathy Dunnam Pleitz and her husband, Dan, and Jim
5658 Dunnam and his wife, Michelle; to his grandchildren, Vanessa,
5759 Jennifer, Stephanie, Joshua, Jacob, Jordan, Lauren, Mason, and
5860 Rachel; to his 12 great-grandchildren; and to his other relatives
5961 and friends; and, be it further
6062 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
6163 prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
6264 this day, it do so in memory of Vance Dunnam.
