6 | 12 | | WHEREAS, In 1846, the first legislature of the State of |

7 | 13 | | Texas established Anderson County on a 100-acre tract of land and |

8 | 14 | | designated Palestine as the county seat, which was named after a |
---|
9 | 15 | | town in Illinois that had been the previous home of early |
---|
10 | 16 | | settlers; and |
---|
11 | 17 | | WHEREAS, The town benefited from the shipment of |
---|
12 | 18 | | agricultural goods on the Trinity River in its early history, and |
---|
13 | 19 | | in 1875, the county awarded a $150,000 bonus to the |
---|
14 | 20 | | International-Great Northern Railroad for selecting Palestine as |
---|
15 | 21 | | its headquarters, a decision that led the town's population to |
---|
16 | 22 | | double to more than 4,000 within five years; and |
---|
17 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Palestine has continued to thrive as a |
---|
18 | 24 | | transportation and shipping hub and has attracted several major |
---|
19 | 25 | | manufacturers due to its favorable location near major highways |
---|
20 | 26 | | as well as the Union Pacific Railroad; two of Walmart's |
---|
21 | 27 | | distribution centers, a number of wholesale beverage and |
---|
22 | 28 | | aerospace parts distributors, and a growing medical industry |
---|
23 | 29 | | contribute to the city's thriving economy; Trinity Valley |
---|
24 | 30 | | Community College-Palestine and The University of Texas at Tyler |
---|
25 | 31 | | Palestine Campus further sustain Palestine's well-educated |
---|
26 | 32 | | workforce; and |
---|
27 | 33 | | WHEREAS, As a designated Texas Main Street City, Palestine |
---|
28 | 34 | | draws visitors with its many magnificent Victorian-style homes, |
---|
29 | 35 | | popular landmarks, and historic sites designed by such noted |
---|
30 | 36 | | architects as Nicholas Clayton and Wesley Clark Dodson; the Texas |
---|
31 | 37 | | State Railroad, the oldest heritage railway in the state, offers |
---|
32 | 38 | | both steam and diesel train excursions, and travelers enjoy the |
---|
33 | 39 | | unique beauty of the dogwood trees at Davey Dogwood Park, a |
---|
34 | 40 | | 254-acre park with eight miles of unincorporated hiking and |
---|
35 | 41 | | biking trails featuring scenic views; and |
---|
36 | 42 | | WHEREAS, Palestine has practiced careful stewardship of |
---|
37 | 43 | | its rich past and natural beauty while adapting to the changing |
---|
38 | 44 | | demands of modern commerce, and its residents may take |
---|
39 | 45 | | justifiable pride in the dynamic and beautiful place that they |
---|
40 | 46 | | call home; now, therefore, be it |

41 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th |

42 | 48 | | Legislature, hereby commend the City of Palestine on its many |
---|
