8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

9 | 9 | | recognize members of the Barbara Jordan Leadership Institute as |

10 | 10 | | they gather at the State Capitol in Austin on April 8, 2025; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Founded in 2020, the Barbara Jordan Leadership |
---|
12 | 12 | | Institute is a nonpartisan organization that works to strengthen |
---|
13 | 13 | | the current generation of Black leaders while preparing and |
---|
14 | 14 | | uplifting the next; led by Black women who are driven by their |
---|
15 | 15 | | lived experiences and committed to community-based leadership in |
---|
16 | 16 | | action, the institute offers training, mentorship, and support |
---|
17 | 17 | | to Black communities throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, |
---|
18 | 18 | | East Texas, and the Greater Houston area; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, The institute seeks to broaden representation in |
---|
20 | 20 | | leadership and demonstrates the power of collective action |
---|
21 | 21 | | through voter education, advocacy, and leadership development; |
---|
22 | 22 | | the Fellowship Program is a key initiative of the institute and |
---|
23 | 23 | | is designed to involve college students and community members in |
---|
24 | 24 | | the electoral process through voter registration and civic |
---|
25 | 25 | | engagement initiatives at institutions including Jarvis |
---|
26 | 26 | | Christian University, Lamar University, Prairie View A&M |
---|
27 | 27 | | University, Stephen F. Austin State University, Texas Southern |
---|
28 | 28 | | University, and Thurgood Marshall School of Law; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, The Barbara Jordan Leadership Institute is |
---|
30 | 30 | | dedicated to shaping a future in which diverse leadership fosters |
---|
31 | 31 | | fair, safe, and prosperous communities, and this special day |
---|
32 | 32 | | serves as a fitting opportunity to amplify the voices of those |
---|
33 | 33 | | historically underrepresented in policymaking and to promote |
---|
34 | 34 | | civic participation, advocacy, and leadership development among |
---|
35 | 35 | | our state's emerging Black leaders; now, therefore, be it |
---|
36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th |
---|
37 | 37 | | Legislature, hereby commend the Barbara Jordan Leadership |
---|
38 | 38 | | Institute on its vital contributions to democracy in Texas and |
---|
39 | 39 | | extend to all best wishes for a memorable and rewarding day at the |
---|
40 | 40 | | State Capitol; and, be it further |
---|
41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
