7+ SENATE RESOLUTION
58 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
69 commemorates the life of Norma Jean Spiller de Jong, who died
710 November 15, 2024, at the age of 97; and
811 WHEREAS, Norma Jean Spiller was born on August 8, 1927, and
912 she grew up in Ponca City, Oklahoma; she attended Cottey College,
1013 and she went on to earn a bachelor's degree in religious
1114 education from Phillips University and a master's degree in
1215 public health from the University of Michigan; and
1316 WHEREAS, Norma shared 61 years of marriage with Dirk de
1417 Jong, and they found great joy in traveling the world together;
1518 they resided in Panama, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, and Argentina
1619 before settling in Houston, where Norma enjoyed a 17-year career
1720 with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center; and
1821 WHEREAS, Norma and Dirk were blessed with four children,
1922 Richard, Els, Dayna, and Kaes, and their eight grandchildren and
2023 seven great-grandchildren enriched her life immeasurably; and
2124 WHEREAS, Guided throughout her life by her spiritual
2225 faith, Norma served as an elder and was an active member of the
2326 congregation of Northwoods Presbyterian Church, and she gave
2427 generously of her time and energy as a volunteer with Northwest
2528 Assistance Ministries and the Philanthropic Educational
2629 Organization Sisterhood; and
2730 WHEREAS, Norma was a source of inspiration to her many
2831 friends and loved ones through her selfless example and her
2932 enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest, and she leaves
30- behind memories that will long be cherished by her family and
31- by all who were privileged to share in her life; now,
32- therefore, be it

3336 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
3437 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3538 family of Norma Jean Spiller de Jong; and, be it further
3639 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3740 her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
3841 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
3942 memory of Norma de Jong.
