7 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Richard Whitaker developed a love of sports as a |

8 | 14 | | young and multitalented high school athlete under the direction |
---|
9 | 15 | | of coach Buddy Brashear; he accepted a pole vaulting scholarship |
---|
10 | 16 | | from Northwestern State University in Louisiana, where he was |
---|
11 | 17 | | inspired to direct his passion for athletics into a rewarding |
---|
12 | 18 | | career path; and |
---|
13 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Richard was honored to begin his coaching career |
---|
14 | 20 | | at Aldine High School and to work alongside legendary football |
---|
15 | 21 | | coach Bill Smith, who inspired him to adopt the highly effective |
---|
16 | 22 | | strategy known as the veer offense; Richard went on to become |
---|
17 | 23 | | head football coach at Kingsville High School, and during his |
---|
18 | 24 | | third season, he led the team to compete in the playoffs for the |
---|
19 | 25 | | first time in decades; and |
---|
20 | 26 | | WHEREAS, In 2005, Coach Whitaker accepted the role of head |
---|
21 | 27 | | football coach and athletic director of Calhoun High School, and |
---|
22 | 28 | | the following year, he guided the relatively unknown small-town |
---|
23 | 29 | | football team into the playoffs; under his skilled leadership, |
---|
24 | 30 | | Calhoun became known as a powerhouse in high school football, and |
---|
25 | 31 | | from 2018 through 2020, the Sandcrabs dominated competition with |
---|
26 | 32 | | some of the best rushing teams in the nation; and |
---|
27 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Despite Coach Whitaker's numerous trophies and |
---|
28 | 34 | | accolades, his coaching achievements are secondary to his |
---|
29 | 35 | | sincere investment in the well-being of the many young athletes |
---|
30 | 36 | | he has supported both on and off the field; he has served as a |
---|
31 | 37 | | trusted mentor and role model to countless young athletes and has |
---|
32 | 38 | | imparted wisdom and guidance to help foster their success in |
---|
33 | 39 | | every facet of life; and |
---|
34 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Richard Whitaker is an esteemed figure in Texas |
---|
35 | 41 | | high school football and in the coaching profession, and he is a |
---|
36 | 42 | | treasured member of the Calhoun community; he has set lasting |
---|
37 | 43 | | standards for excellence at Calhoun High School, and his presence |
---|
38 | 44 | | and leadership as head coach and athletic director will be |
---|
39 | 45 | | greatly missed; now, therefore, be it |
---|
40 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th |
---|
41 | 47 | | Legislature, hereby commend Richard Whitaker on his exemplary |
---|
42 | 48 | | career and his outstanding tenure at Calhoun High School and |
---|
43 | 49 | | extend to him best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
---|
44 | 50 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
45 | 51 | | him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
