7+ SENATE RESOLUTION
28 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
39 welcome members of the Blazing Southwest Region of Delta Sigma
410 Theta Sorority, Incorporated, who are convening on April 14,
511 2025, to celebrate Red and White Day at the State Capitol; and
612 WHEREAS, Founded on the campus of Howard University in
713 1913, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is one of the largest sororities
814 in the United States and includes more than 350,000 initiated
915 members and nearly 1,000 alumnae chapters; for more than a
1016 century, the sorority has upheld its mission to promote academic
1117 excellence, improve communities, support the underserved, and
1218 encourage civic and political awareness and participation in the
1319 establishment of sound public policy; and
1420 WHEREAS, The Blazing Southwest Region of Delta Sigma Theta
1521 was sanctioned in 1932 and comprises 142 chapters located in four
1622 states and on one island; the region represents 25,000 sorority
1723 members and is home to four of the sorority's beloved founding
1824 members: Myra Lillian Davis-Hemmings of Gonzales, Zephyr Chisom
1925 Carter of El Paso, Jessie McGuire Dent of Galveston, and
2026 Frederica Chase Dodd of Dallas; and
2127 WHEREAS, Red and White Day at the Capitol presents a
2228 valuable opportunity for Delta Sigma Theta members to engage with
2329 state legislators; this year's delegation will address such
2430 relevant issues as health equity, economic equity, civic
2531 justice, voting rights, and women's rights, and participants
2632 will have the opportunity to benefit from legislative briefings,
2733 issue forums, and advocacy training; and
2834 WHEREAS, The women of Delta Sigma Theta have done much to
2935 enrich the state and the nation through their exemplary civic
3036 service and their enduring commitment to create positive change
3137 in their communities, and it is indeed fitting that they receive
3238 special recognition on their outstanding achievements and their
33- many contributions to the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it

3440 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
3541 Legislature, hereby recognize April 14, 2025, as Red and White
3642 Day at the Capitol and extend to the members of the Blazing
3743 Southwest Region of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority best wishes for a
3844 memorable and rewarding day in Austin; and, be it further
3945 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
4046 honor of this special occasion.
