2	8		WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	9		welcome members of the Blazing Southwest Region of Delta Sigma
4	10		Theta Sorority, Incorporated, who are convening on April 14,
5	11		2025, to celebrate Red and White Day at the State Capitol; and
6	12		WHEREAS, Founded on the campus of Howard University in
7	13		1913, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is one of the largest sororities
8	14		in the United States and includes more than 350,000 initiated
9	15		members and nearly 1,000 alumnae chapters; for more than a
10	16		century, the sorority has upheld its mission to promote academic
11	17		excellence, improve communities, support the underserved, and
12	18		encourage civic and political awareness and participation in the
13	19		establishment of sound public policy; and
14	20		WHEREAS, The Blazing Southwest Region of Delta Sigma Theta
15	21		was sanctioned in 1932 and comprises 142 chapters located in four
16	22		states and on one island; the region represents 25,000 sorority
17	23		members and is home to four of the sorority's beloved founding
18	24		members: Myra Lillian Davis-Hemmings of Gonzales, Zephyr Chisom
19	25		Carter of El Paso, Jessie McGuire Dent of Galveston, and
20	26		Frederica Chase Dodd of Dallas; and
21	27		WHEREAS, Red and White Day at the Capitol presents a
22	28		valuable opportunity for Delta Sigma Theta members to engage with
23	29		state legislators; this year's delegation will address such
24	30		relevant issues as health equity, economic equity, civic
25	31		justice, voting rights, and women's rights, and participants
26	32		will have the opportunity to benefit from legislative briefings,
27	33		issue forums, and advocacy training; and
28	34		WHEREAS, The women of Delta Sigma Theta have done much to
29	35		enrich the state and the nation through their exemplary civic
30	36		service and their enduring commitment to create positive change
31	37		in their communities, and it is indeed fitting that they receive
32	38		special recognition on their outstanding achievements and their
33		-	many contributions to the Lone ~~Star~~ State; now, therefore, be it

34	40		RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
35	41		Legislature, hereby recognize April 14, 2025, as Red and White
36	42		Day at the Capitol and extend to the members of the Blazing
37	43		Southwest Region of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority best wishes for a
38	44		memorable and rewarding day in Austin; and, be it further
39	45		RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
40	46		honor of this special occasion.
