28 WHEREAS, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church Day is being
39 celebrated at the State Capitol on April 16, 2025; and
410 WHEREAS, In 1949, Bishop Wendelin J. Nold of the Diocese of
5- Galveston embarked on a plan to buy property for the construction
6- of new parish churches; after identifying 35 Catholic families in
11+ Galveston embarked on a plan to buy property for the construction of
12+ new parish churches; after identifying 35 Catholic families in
713 Houston's Sunnyside neighborhood, Bishop Nold asked Father Michael
814 J. Flaherty of Saint Nicholas Catholic Church to locate potential
915 sites in the area; in June 1951, negotiations began on a tract of
1016 land on the southwest corner of what later became Cullen Boulevard
1117 and Reed Road; and
1218 WHEREAS, Construction on St. Francis Xavier was completed in
1319 1952, with Father James Clark assigned to lead the church as its
1420 first pastor; members later built a parish hall, which served as a
1521 kindergarten, Sunday school classroom, and meeting space, and a
1622 rectory was added in 1956; and
1723 WHEREAS, Membership grew from 300 to 1,700 in the church's
1824 first three years, necessitating the expansion of its parish hall
1925 and catechetical center; plans to add a new building to the campus
2026 were implemented by Father Elbert Harris, the church's first
2127 African American pastor; the new hall was used for children's Pre-K
2228 through grade 12 education and for parish events, and the old hall
2329 became a senior citizen nutrition center; and
24- WHEREAS, A new church building was completed and dedicated
25- by Bishop John Morkovsky on June 19, 1975; it had a 500-seat
26- capacity, as well as a special chapel dedicated to the martyrs of
27- Uganda; in the 1990s, the old church building was renovated for use
28- as religious education classrooms, and it was renamed the Harris
30+ WHEREAS, A new church building was completed and dedicated by
31+ Bishop John Morkovsky on June 19, 1975; it had a 500-seat capacity,
32+ as well as a special chapel dedicated to the martyrs of Uganda; in
33+ the 1990s, the old church building was renovated for use as
34+ religious education classrooms, and it was renamed the Harris

42- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
43- Legislature, hereby recognize St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church
44- Day at the State Capitol on April 16, 2025, and extend a warm
45- welcome to the visiting delegation; and, be it further
45+ St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church for spiritual guidance through
46+ the years, and it is a pleasure to join in honoring the church's
47+ rich history; now, therefore, be it
48+ RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 89th Texas Legislature
49+ hereby recognize St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church Day at the
50+ State Capitol on April 16, 2025, and extend a warm welcome to the
51+ visiting delegation; and, be it further
