2- WHEREAS, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley chess
3- team furthered its legacy of success by becoming co-champions of
4- the 2025 President's Cup tournament, held April 5 and 6 in
5- Dallas; and
6- WHEREAS, The Vaqueros qualified for the President's Cup
7- with their victory at the Pan-American Intercollegiate Team

8+ WHEREAS, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley chess team
9+ furthered its legacy of success by becoming co-champions of the
10+ 2025 President's Cup tournament, held April 5 and 6 in Dallas; and
11+ WHEREAS, The Vaqueros qualified for the President's Cup with
12+ their victory at the Pan-American Intercollegiate Team
813 Championship in January; on the last day of that tournament, the
914 UTRGV A Team bested The University of Texas at Dallas, earning a
1015 perfect score of six points after winning all six of its matches;
1116 the Vaqueros were the only team among the 91 competing squads to
1217 execute a flawless performance; and
13- WHEREAS, UTRGV entered the President's Cup tournament
14- ranked fourth out of the four qualifying teams, but its players
15- remained undaunted; the Vaqueros opened the event against
16- Webster University, splitting the match in a 2-2 draw, and the
17- second round contest with Saint Louis University also ended in
18- a 2-2 tie; going into the final round against UT Dallas, UTRGV
19- trailed the leading teams by a half point, but the Vaqueros
20- rallied to finish with a total score of 7, tying Webster
21- University for a share of the championship; the team's
22- performance earned UTRGV its fourth national title, adding to
23- the three consecutive wins the program achieved beginning in
24- 2018; and
25- WHEREAS, The UTRGV team benefited from the contributions
26- of grandmasters Gleb Dudin, Shawn Rodrigue-Lemieux, and Jose
27- Cardoso Cardoso, and international master Jakub Fus; over the
28- course of the year, these talented players benefited from the
29- able guidance of coach Bartek Macieja; and
18+ WHEREAS, UTRGV entered the President's Cup tournament ranked
19+ fourth out of the four qualifying teams, but its players remained
20+ undaunted; the Vaqueros opened the event against Webster
21+ University, splitting the match in a 2-2 draw, and the second round
22+ contest with Saint Louis University also ended in a 2-2 tie; going

35- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
36- Legislature, hereby congratulate The University of Texas Rio
37- Grande Valley chess team on earning a share of the national
38- championship at the 2025 President's Cup tournament and extend to
39- all those associated with the program sincere best wishes for
40- continued success; and, be it further
35+ years, the UT Rio Grande Valley team has distinguished itself as a
36+ powerhouse in collegiate chess, and the 2025 Vaquero competitors
37+ may indeed reflect with pride on a job well done; now, therefore, be
38+ it
39+ RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 89th Texas Legislature
40+ hereby congratulate The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley chess
41+ team on earning a share of the national championship at the 2025
42+ President's Cup tournament and extend to all those associated with
43+ the program sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it
44+ further
